Diving into three numbers that stick out ahead of the week six matchup between the Washington Commanders and San Francisco 49ers

The Washington Commanders have turned the page from the week five tie after quarterback Jayden Daniels was one of several to take accountability, yet the road ahead only gets tougher with a primetime matchup against the San Francisco 49ers set for Monday night.

While this marks the first meeting between the two teams on Monday Night Football since 1988, the Commanders will look to secure their first win in San Francisco since 2004 in hopes of turning around the season ahead of the bye week.

With head coach Dan Quinn entering the matchup with a 1-3-1 record and looking for the first win away from Northwest Stadium in 2026, we take a look at three stats that stick out ahead of the matchup:

3...the number of sacks allowed by the Niners through five games. That may pose a challenge for the Commanders, whose ten sacks are tied with the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts for the sixth-fewest through five games. With veteran left tackle Trent Williams anchoring the unit once more, this is the game that $100 million edge rusher Odafe Oweh will need to live up to expectations after registering two sacks and one forced fumble to begin his tenure. The Commanders' pass rush has struggled to generate consistent pressure and against a Niners' offense that's red hot heading into week six, defensive coordinator Daronte Jones will need to find a solution.

17.8...the number of points the Niners are averaging in the second half of games. Why does that matter? The Commanders' defense is allowing a league-high 19 points in the second half of games through the first five games in 2026. For a defense that gave up touchdowns on the final three drives in regulation in week five, the Commanders will look to change that. After defensive coordinator Daronte Jones acknowledge the difference in style and urgency for his defense between halves, Monday marks an opportunity to do that. After a season that has watched flashes of greatness on defense, Monday night offers a chance for the Commanders to put their first 60 minute game of the season.

51.9...the percentage of third down attempts that the Niners have converted so far in 2026. That poses a question for a Commanders' defense that ranks 24th in the NFL with opponents converting over 43% of their attempts through five games, including the Giants converting nearly 50% of their attempts in week five.

Veteran wide receiver Mike Evans, one of the offseason additions, is a big part of that after accounting for 21 first downs -- ranked for fifth-most among all NFL wide receivers -- with running back Christian McCaffrey picking up a fresh set of downs on nearly one-quarter of his rushes in 2026. Quarterback Brock Purdy has put the early pieces together for an MVP season as he enters Monday night leading the NFL in passing touchdowns (13), QB rating (85.5) and success rate (57.9%) with just two interceptions thrown.

Washington has also struggled limiting the production of tight ends with veteran George Kittle stepping up as the biggest challenge yet for the defense.

On the flip side, Washington has converted just 31.9% of its third down attempts in 2026 -- ranked fourth-worst across the NFL.
