Quarterback Jayden Daniels admitted where he went wrong and explained how the Washington Commanders move past it

For the first time in the days since the deflating week five tie against the New York Giants, Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels made clear he's taking accountability for how the game ended.

Head coach Dan Quinn has also done so, admitting the game clock management issues "can't happen" while noting the team re-emphasized late game execution coming out of the divisional matchup. With wins tough to come by through a grueling first half of the 2026 regular season, Dan Quinn stressed on Thursday that it's, "my responsibility, point blank, period."

Quinn added the late game miscue has also been "dissected, discussed and corrected internally" when asked about conversations with offensive coordinator David Blough.

Yet Daniels acknowledged his part in how it ended given the quarterback had an opportunity to get rid of the football prior to going down at the line of scrimmage, a play that let the clock run out with a question about the offense's lack of urgency in the seconds after the play ended.

How the game ended derailed attention from the first game back from injury for Daniels after totaling 199 passing yards while completing 68% of his passes, along with adding 103 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Daniels also became the first quarterback to rush for two touchdowns over 25 yards in the same game since Mike Vick in 2002.

Instead, all the focus is on the Commanders' defense allowing touchdowns on the final three drives in regulation, including 14 fourth quarter points, en route to a frustrating finish inside Northwest Stadium.

The growing heat that Quinn has faced that has led many across the league pointing to the Commanders' head coach squarely atop the hot seat list, but with Daniels being the one on the field, he's aware he had opportunities to get his team situated in a critical moment.

"I'm the person on the field that's supposed to calm everything, control everything and I failed to the standard I hold myself to and the standard in this organization," Daniels said. "So it's just something for me to move on [from]."

While it marks the end of the saga despite the Commanders still able to claim they're undefeated at home in 2026, the next part is how the Commanders bounce back in the midst of a season with heightened pressure and facing a 1-3-1 overall record.

The road ahead won't get any easier with the Commanders set to face the San Francisco 49ers, one of the NFL's three remaining unbeaten teams, in the first of two games scheduled on Monday Night Football. With head coach Dan Quinn looking to guide his team to its first win away from Northwest Stadium this season, all eyes are fixated on what the turnaround materializes into in week six.
