With Brandon Aiyuk drawing more negative headlines this week, could the Washington Commanders opt to stand pat with the current wide receiver room?
The Washington Commanders are focusing on themselves through the second week on OTAs. That was clear when head coach Dan Quinn was asked on 106.7 about the possibility of the organization signing Stefon Diggs, a veteran receiver with local ties.
It was clear when both right tackle Josh Conerly and edge rusher Odafe Oweh were asked about other moves around the league, like Myles Garrett headed to the Rams in a blockbuster trade.
"It's us, only us. It's always been us," Oweh added.
There's been a steady sense of that from the Commanders, whether it be the front office or Quinn, when addressing additional moves at wide receiver, the position that has arguably drawn the most consistent scrutiny all offseason.
Yet seemingly each time the unit is brought up, the idea of the team acquiring Brandon Aiyuk - eventually - is reiterated. For the most part, the lack of real news around what could happen has led to many to question what the timeline looks like. The 49ers expressed a desire to trade, not release, Aiyuk to finalize the divorce, but no team has expressed even remote interest in parting with draft capital on a player who has both injury and off-the-field issues that have remained unresolved. The only issue is those off-the-field issues found themselves back in the headlines once again.
A citation for Aiyuk's arrest was issued on Wednesday, stemming from the viral video that Aiyuk posted of him driving over 100 mph past the 49ers' Levi's Stadium back on Dec. 20, 2025. The complaint was executed on Feb. 11 and filed less than two weeks later, per court documents, before officially coming to light just after the post-June 1 mini-free agent frenzy.
Whether the continued negative headlines opt to alter Washington's thinking in a possible pursuit could be one that gets answered in the weeks - but more likely months - ahead with even less incentive for the 49ers to make a roster move.
Could that mantra incentive the tweaked Commanders staff to focus on its in-house options? That might be the approach to take - and if Aiyuk eventually becomes available, the Commanders can address the situation then.
Quinn made clear he's excited about the development of the wide receiver room, specifically highlighting Jaylin Lane as one, "taking that step that you'd hope to see a player take from year one to year two." Rookie Antonio Williams took more reps as a slot than outside receiver through his first week of OTAs as he looks to live up to expectations as an instant impact, while that's not considering the emphasis on veteran Terry McLaurin's role.
While local product and receiver Stefon Diggs also remains available, another veteran who could opt to ink with a team closer to training camp than during offseason workouts, it might be becoming clear that Washington is content with the current room of wide receivers even with all the outside noise.
