The Washington Commanders have drawn criticism for the lack of impact moves at wide receiver, but June 1 marks the next chance for a Brandon Aiyuk resolution to materialize.
4 PM EST on June 1 marks a notable day on the NFL calendar given it's when teams can begin making roster moves that involve players with bigger dead money against the cap, giving front offices a chance to spread the cap hit over the span of two seasons rather than one.
Why does it matter for the Washington Commanders? It's the next date when, if something were to happen with San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, it could start to materialize starting on Monday afternoon.
June 1 marks the day that San Francisco could save roughly $20 million in cap space if they make a move to release Aiyuk. General manager John Lynch has made clear the Niners' preference is to find a trade partner for Aiyuk, but given the reported lack of communication over the last year combined with his post-injury questions, that has never picked up legs. Lynch reiterated the preference ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft, though Washington showed no signs from parting from any of the already limited draft capital available to general manager Adam Peters.
The caveat is time is still on the Niners' side. The only deadline the San Francisco front office has to be mindful of is Sept. 1, which is when Aiyuk has a near $25 million option bonus due. Given the Commanders are also set to travel to San Francisco to face the Niners in week six on primetime, it makes sense for the Niners to still use all the time available to them.
Aiyuk has been one of two veteran wide receivers that Washington has been linked to this offseason alongside Stefon Diggs, though a report last week indicated he's unlikely to sign with any team until closer to training camp in August. The Kansas City Chiefs have been routinely linked to Diggs in light of Rashee Rice's legal and injury questions through the offseason, but so has Washington given the local connections as the former Good Counsel and University of Maryland product weighs his reported multiple interested teams ahead of his 12th season in the NFL.
While another outlet pointed to Washington as a sensible trade partner and fit for Buffalo Bills wide receiver Keon Coleman, whether the front office opts to pull the trigger on another weapon for quarterback Jayden Daniels ahead of 2026 could soon be answered once again.
Until then, the Commanders will look to build momentum into the second week of OTAs beginning Wednesday, June 3.
