Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels talks about his road to recovery and the new offensive system under David Blough
After being limited to just four full games and seven appearances in 2025, quarterback Jayden Daniels feels the need to prove himself heading into his third NFL season with the Washington Commanders.
"I think in this profession, if you feel like you don't have something to prove, then you shouldn't be doing it."
It comes after Daniels admitted the injuries that derailed his sophomore season "left a bitter taste in my mouth" while several other quarterbacks in his draft class went on their postseason runs one season after the former Rookie of the Year. Quinn admitted that he's "feeling those same instincts" that Daniels flashed during his first season in the NFL while pointing to him acclimating within the new offensive system. Now fully healthy and leading workouts with his wide receivers ahead of OTAs, Daniels is out to prove himself among the league's best once again.
One thing he doesn't feel he has to prove is his ability as an under center quarterback after pointing to the need to "be versatile in whatever you can" while head coach Dan Quinn noted the staff has already "done a good bit of it."
"They've definitely put in the work together so far. But like most things, we just need reps and time on task at it," Quinn said.
With a need for efficiency and balance in the year one offense under David Blough, Quinn explained that "urgency" was what he wanted to see from his star quarterback over the coming weeks.
"He's a multiplier so the quickness in and out of the huddles, the motions, the shifts, the communication, the checks at the line of scrimmage. Those are the things that are there," Quinn said.
That urgency will come as comfort with his new weapons continues to grow, like tight end Chig Okonkwo, who Daniels said "plays fast," or wide receiver Antonio Williams, who Daniels tabbed as "very crafty with his routes." What it still doesn't include is Brandon Aiyuk, the 49ers wide receiver who has been linked to the Commanders for months with no timeline for a resolution in sight. A big reason for that connection stems from Daniels, who reiterated his friendship with the hopeful future Commanders wide receiver. Whether that happens isn't something Daniels knows will end up materializing.
"I don't know. I don't have a sense on it. That is my brother and we have a personal relationship but his football future, that's out of my control."
