The controversial WR makes his desire to land in DC clear yet again in late-night Instagram posts.

Unless you have been sleeping under a rock, you’ve probably heard that Brandon Aiyuk wants to become a Washington Commander.

Through not-so-subtle means, Aiyuk has made his desire to join his college QB known. That includes washing his Instagram account down to just five followed profiles—a list that features his wife, a shoe company, his former Arizona State teammate Jayden Daniels, and the Washington Commanders' main handle.

On Saturday morning, he once again did what he does best: set NFL Twitter ablaze from his couch.

In a pair of  Instagram stories that instantly set the DMV timeline on fire, Aiyuk posed shirtless in a mirror selfie while rocking a Washington Commanders hat. He followed it up with a picture of a football and a caption that read:

"❌ the 🧢 the gig is 🆙."

To translate, he’s saying “Stop the Cap, the Gig is Up.” It's a direct nod to rap artist Drake, who took a targeted shot at music mogul Jay-Z on his latest album, Iceman, which dropped about three weeks ago.

By invoking the lyrics, Aiyuk is basically saying, “Stop lying, 49ers, your fraudulent ways are being exposed.” His desire to leave the organization and land with the Commanders couldn't be more obvious.

This is premier summer Twitter. It lacks true substance, but it is incredibly fun to talk about. Aiyuk clearly wants out of San Francisco, but the 49ers may sit pat until August 31st in hopes of extracting a late-round draft pick for his services.

Washington and SF are essentially playing a massive game of chicken, and both organizations are undoubtedly looking forward to this saga finally ending.

Let’s take a quick look at this chaotic timeline and what could happen next.

How Did We Get Here? A Quick Refresher

To understand why Aiyuk is wearing the Burgundy and Gold on Instagram, we have to look back at the rollercoaster ride of the last two years:

August 2024: Aiyuk signs a massive four-year, $120 million extension with San Francisco.

October 2024: Just seven games into his new deal, tragedy strikes when he suffers a torn ACL and MCL in Week 7. This follows a slow start to the season, causing rumors to arise that San Francisco has buyer's remorse.

The 2025 "Ghost" Season:  The 2025 "Ghost" Season: Aiyuk’s rehab process turns toxic. Reports surface that he is missing team obligations—specifically rehabbing at the team facility—and cutting off communication. He spends the entire 2025 season on the PUP list, leading a frustrated 49ers front office to officially void his 2026 contract guarantees.

The Social Media Scrub: Ahead of this offseason, Aiyuk wipes his socials and trims his "following" list to just five accounts.

**EDITOR'S NOTE**

Shortly after publication, Brandon Aiyuk took to Instagram yet again, this time speaking directly to camera. In the post, Aiyuk claimed the 49ers organization is 'scared to let him go,' adding fuel to an already blazing fire.

Speeding Into Trouble

As if the contract drama wasn't enough, the story took a wild turn this week. The Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office confirmed an active arrest warrant has been issued for Aiyuk for a misdemeanor charge of "exhibition of speed."

The source? A video Aiyuk posted to his own YouTube channel back in December showing him driving over 100 mph past the 49ers' home field, Levi's Stadium. You truly cannot make this stuff up. While he apologized at the time, local authorities aren't letting it slide.

Whether Aiyuk will face actual jail time remains up in the air, but he will absolutely have to clear his legal standing before officially joining Washington. Expect fines, community service, and probation once a settlement is reached.

Why It Makes Sense for Aiyuk

Arizona State Sun Devils quarterback Jayden Daniels (5) and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk (2) celebrate their 38-34 win over Washington State on Oct. 12, 2019 in Tempe, Ariz.Arizona State Sun Devils quarterback Jayden Daniels (5) and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk (2) celebrate their 38-34 win over Washington State on Oct. 12, 2019 in Tempe, Ariz.

The connection to Washington is deeply personal. Aiyuk and Jayden Daniels were dominant teammates at Arizona State before Daniels transferred to LSU, and the two have remained incredibly close.

There is also a direct path to immediate playing time. Washington’s receiving room is questionable at best in terms of proven, high-end talent outside of Terry McLaurin. If Aiyuk is in good physical shape, he could be reunited with his best friend and out on the field by mid-September after a brief period of re-acclimation.

Plus, Aiyuk knows Adam Peters from their overlapping days in the Bay Area. Peters was in the front office when the 49ers drafted Aiyuk in 2020 and knows him well. The dots practically connect themselves.

Is He Worth the Squeeze?

As fun as the Instagram drama can be, bringing Aiyuk to DC isn’t a guaranteed home run. If Peters and the Commanders are going to make this move, they have to weigh three massive hurdles:

The Medicals: Aiyuk hasn't played a single snap of live football since October 2024.

The Contract: Any team trading for him inherits a cap hit north of $26 million for 2026, plus a looming ~$25 million option bonus due in September.

The Off-Field Baggage: Front offices will have to thoroughly vet the latest arrest warrant, ensure his head is in the game, and verify that he is still in peak playing shape.

Because the league knows the relationship between Aiyuk and the 49ers is broken beyond repair, rival GMs are content to wait out John Lynch for a straight-up release rather than trade away valuable assets. Multiple league executives have already labeled him "untradeable" at his current price tag. Expect Washington to sit tight and wait for Aiyuk’s eventual release, even if it doesn't happen until late August.

The Bottom Line

Aiyuk has made his opening move, effectively shutting out other suitors and locking his sights on Washington. The ball is entirely in San Francisco's court. Do they blink and release him, or keep him in a deep freeze through mandatory minicamps?

Until John Lynch makes a move, keep your notifications turned on.
