Should the Washington Commanders turn to a local star in veteran wide receiver Stefon Diggs to finalize the wide receiver room in 2026?
Maybe the biggest remaining need for the Washington Commanders this offseason remains on offense with a consistent interest among fans to make another proven weapon available to quarterback Jayden Daniels in 2026. While the NFL Draft gave the front office a chance to add one in Clemson star Antonio Williams, maybe the biggest development at the position materialized this week with the path for a local product to make his return to the NFL.
USA Today named the Washington Commanders one of several fits for wide receiver Stefon Diggs, joining the Denver Broncos, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Rams.
While Williams could be the one to step into that void as the WR2, Diggs steps into an opportunity to fill a top need after seeing his path to the NFL cleared this week following a not guilty verdict on multiple counts, paving the way to likely avoid suspension pending an official announcement from the league.
While Diggs will likely draw interest from several teams ahead of the summer, the rationale behind the interest in the Gaithersburg, Md. native who dazzled at the University of Maryland is an easy one to make.
"Diggs...would diversify and elevate this passing attack for third-year QB Jayden Daniels, whether or not 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk eventually lands here," USA Today said of the Commanders' fit for the veteran. "And with nearly $50 million in available salary cap space, the Commanders could certainly afford to import Diggs better than most."
The question may soon shift to whether Aiyuk should even be a continued target to monitor this offseason if Diggs materializes into a tangible target amid the need to add weapons around Daniels.
Diggs, a former fifth round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, has notched at least 1,000 receiving yards in seven of his last eight seasons with the exception being an injury-shortened season after playing just eight games in his lone season with the Texans.
Diggs would also be able to add to the skillset and playmaking in the wide receiver room with tight end Chig Okonkwo able to capitalize as an athletic option to move the chains with a chance to turn a big play in David Blough's offense. Veteran Terry McLaurin is expected to be a focal point of the attack while one could make the argument that Diggs could give the passing attack enough weapons in hopes of creating a balanced offense powered by a committed approach in 2026.
It's a matter of when, not if, Diggs starts to see interest pick up. Whether the hometown interest materializes as many hope will now be the next questions, but even those around the NFL can see what the 32 year old can add to the Commanders offense in 2026.
After returning to the area for his Diggs Deep Foundation event, Diggs was asked about possible interest from the Commanders.
"I'm familiar with the city and I'm familiar with the people so we're going to see down the pipe over these next couple months what looks good, what makes sense. I definitely want to shed some light on them and might go check them out for a little bit."
