The winds of change might be blowing through The Star for the Dallas Cowboys this offseason, ever so slightly, anyway.
With the franchise bucking the trend on the hiring process of Christian Parker, then the news came through that Dallas wasn't sitting on its hands regarding players' contracts.
They got running back Javonte Williams signed to a three-year, $24 million deal, with $16 million guaranteed.
It was fast, quick, and quiet. Very un-Cowboys-like.
But that is exactly what the fan base wanted.
There are a handful of contracts that have to be sorted, with George Pickens and Brandon Aubrey the next in line, but to get Williams signed, sealed, and delivered well before free agency begins, that's a big tick for the organization.
And head coach Brian Schottenheimer is over the moon that Javonte is coming back.
"It was awesome,” Schottenheimer said. “It was a big piece of what we wanted to do because of the changes that we're dealing with on defense and all the change on the staff and having some holes we need to fill.
"To get a piece like Javonte back that's still young, and I think ascending football player, his play style, leadership, but a big part of it was he wanted to be here, and we wanted him back. I love everything about the guy, and I really feel can help push this offense even to another level.”
Javonte was seen as a dart throw last offseason, after he fell behind in the pecking order in Denver.
An ACL injury also hampered his development, but Williams was still seen as another bargain-basement free agent. A classic Cowboys move.
Except this one paid off, and big time.
Williams would have a career year, with 1,201 rushing yards and 11 TDs, to play a key role in the Cowboys producing a top-10 run game under Schottenheimer and offensive coordinator Klayton Adams.
Now, he's in Dallas for the next three seasons and is set to be the spearhead of the running back room, a position that has garnered attention for the past couple of offseasons.
It was a fair deal for both parties, and a quick one. Exactly how the offseason should begin.
But will the trend continue? Your guess is as good as mine.
