The Dallas Cowboys are on a defensive coordinator hunt, and for many, the person at the top of that list is Brian Flores.
But there always was a problem with Dallas wanting Flores.
He is after a head coaching job.
And now there is another one ...
If he doesn't get a head coaching job, he's got his backup plan, as he's re-upped with the Minnesota Vikings.
Still, that hasn't stopped the Washington Commanders from interviewing him for their defensive coordinator position, so to many critics, it shouldn't have stopped Dallas.
The idea of Flores leading this Cowboys defense to complement Dak Prescott and one of the best offenses in football was a tantalizing thought.
But if you thought Flores in Dallas had a legitimate chance at happening?
Our own Mike Fisher offered his thoughts on Dallas' pursuit of Flores and the big obstacle in the way.
"The Cowboys are attracted to Brian Flores, that's not an opinion, that's a fact," Fish said recently, following the firing of Matt Eberflus. "They find him fascinating as a candidate to be the defensive coordinator here. Here's a major obstacle with Brian Flores and the Cowboys.
"He has no tolerance for circus nonsense, while Jerry's team defines circus nonsense. This is a Schotty project. But Jerry still has veto power. And I bet you there's debate inside that building right there about how's he going to fit our culture."
And there you have it.
Meanwhile, Fish is also reporting that Dallas is "focused'' on four candidates, with Eagles aide Christian Parker, 34, possibly topping the list.
The idea of getting Flores inside the building is great for the defense, but it would also potentially force a culture shift inside The Star.
That is why Flores would be such a huge get for the Cowboys.
The main thing would stay the main thing.
For years, fans have cried out for that sort of change, but as Fish adds, Schottenheimer has been driving this culture change all year, and we know that when it comes to how things are run around here, the buck stops with Mr. Jones.
"The idea that Brian Flores is doing a meeting over here or we're lifting weights over there, and here comes a tour group through the star, Brian Flores is not going to pause and pose for selfies with the tour group," Fish said.
"If you want a real culture change here, you hire Brian Flores. If you want a culture change that really goes to the top, you hire Brian Flores."
But that wasn't going to happen if Flores was destined to be a "hot'' head coaching candidate. And in recent days, not only has he re-signed in Minnesota ... he's also interviewed twice with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the top job, replacing the "retired'' Mike Tomlin.
