Brian Flores emerges as a leading candidate, bringing head-coaching experience to a struggling Cowboys defense. Will Jerry Jones make a splash?

FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys wasted no time vaulting into their offseason moves as they fired beleaguered defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus on Tuesday morning.

And according to one national report, owner Jerry Jones isn't wasting any time in prioritizing a name as Eberflus' replacement.

Eberflus spent one year in the role here and supervised arguably the worst defensive unit in Cowboys history ... surrendering an NFL-high 511 points in 2025, which is the most in Dallas franchise history for one season.

The Cowboys were the only team in the NFL this year to allow over 30 points per game (30.1). They also finished last in passing yards allowed per game.

There can and should be a wide net cast by the Cowboys as they prepare to hire their fourth defensive coordinator in the last four years. But Dianna Russini of The Athletic is reporting that a top "name to watch'' is already on the Cowboys wish list.

"One name to watch for the Cowboys’ new vacancy?'' she says. "Brian Flores.''

There are an assortment of issues with Flores. He surely wants to be a head coach again. Short of that, Minnesota wants to keep him. He is out of contract; would Jerry spend to win a bidding war?

And Flores is a controversial combative guy and everybody’s cup of tea; Does he “fit” here?

Flores is still young at age 44 but he also has head-coaching experience - something that traditionally appeals to Jones.

We did endorse the idea of Dallas firing Eberflus ... and we do endorse the idea of interviewing Flores and others.

And if Jones hires Flores? It will be a public-relations coup for Cowboys Nation. And as for the defense on the field? Well, it couldn't possibly be worse that what Dallas fans just endured.
