The Dallas Cowboys and getting players' futures sorted quickly in the offseason aren't something fans have become accustomed to.
Which is why when the news broke that Dallas and Javonte Williams had agreed to a three-year, $24 million deal with $16 million guaranteed, it was a shock.
A breath of fresh air, even.
Because not only did the Cowboys get proactive in signing one of their own, and yes, Javonte had to want to sign as well, but they did it with ruthless efficiency.
There was no drama. No negotiating in the media. No back-and-forth. Just a quiet deal done in the shadows.
Oh, how Cowboys Nation wishes the same will be coming for George Pickens and now Brandon Aubrey.
But we know that likely won't be the case.
And for Cowboys COO Stephen Jones, he knows how crucial it was to get Javonte's future sorted early in the offseason.
"I think it's real important," Jones said. "The good news, too, Javante was wanting to get it done early. He wanted to be in Dallas. Some representation and players want to have more patience and wait. Every situation's different, and certainly that was one where Javonte was really wanting to be a Cowboy.
"He liked the situation he was in, playing for coach Schottenheimer. He liked playing with Dak, playing with our offensive personnel, felt like it fit him."
So this was as much about the Cowboys wanting to get Williams signed as much as Javonte wanting it as well. And when both parties agree on the terms, we have seen how swiftly things can come together.
So that takes care of one of the trio of key contracts Dallas will negotiate this offseason.
Now to Pickens.
And to Aubrey, who has made waves with a reported desire to make nearly $10 million APY after the Cowboys reportedly offered a deal with a $7.5 million APY.
So that is now looming as another saga, and asking for $10 million? As our Mike Fisher jokes, that might get Aubrey's agent, Todd France, kicked out of Jerry Jones' bus in Indianapolis.
But we wonder: Javonte recognized the value of staying in a place where he "fits.'' Can Pickens, after a sour time in Pittsburgh, see that same light? Can Aubrey, who is from the DFW area, see that same light?
Still, it's all part of the art of negotiation.
And unfortunately, not every deal can be as straightforward as Javonte's.
Sometimes, it gets a little nasty.
