The Dallas Cowboys' defense was so bad in 2025 that the only way up for the unit under new coordinator Christian Parker is up.
Now, with rave reviews of his hiring and how well Parker spoke at his introductory press conference, there is an air of confidence about what he could do for this defense.
But let's not get it twisted, there's a lot of work to be done, and only a short time and resources to do it with.
We know there's potential for over $100 million in cap space, coupled with two first-round draft picks. That's a good place to start.
With at least three or four starting players to be signed, the task Dallas will undertake is huge.
But if done correctly, many think there can be a significant performance uptick from Day 1 under Parker.
However, does he think so?
"Yeah, I don't think we want to put any expectations on it in that regard," Parker said. "I think we just want to kind of take it day by day and do it the right way. So we're kind of just taking that approach. We'll get our head out of the sand at some point, but right now we got tunnel vision on doing things the right way."
Tunnel vision. I like that.
Given that this is his first coordinator job and likely the first time he'll call plays, there are going to be some bumpy moments in 2026.
But the Cowboys' defense was so bad in 2025 that there almost has to be some level of improvement from this group, right?
A full offseason for Quinnen Williams, Shavon Revel. Jr, DeMarvion Overshown, and Kenny Clark, coupled with the potential free agent and draft additions, Parker could get something cooking in Dallas.
But it will be a process.
Don't expect things to magically be fixed after Week 3, although it would be nice.
We know what type of defense Parker wants to run, how he's going to coach his players, and when all that meshes together, what Dallas gets is going to be an interesting watch.
But as far as expectations, keep them simple at this stage of the offseason, and that's exactly what Parker is doing.
