As the offseason begins, there are questions and pressure surrounding Tyler Guyton, but is there a move that Dallas could make to calm everything down?
The Dallas Cowboys don't have many question marks on offense for Brian Schottenheimer, but one that has some concerned is at left tackle.
With Tyler Guyton, so far, not developing the way many had hoped, plus his backup, Nate Thomas, still finding his feet, the players tasked with protecting Dak Prescott's blindside have fans nervous.
Last season, we saw Tyler Smith be kicked out to left tackle, in a move we think was to see how Tyler fared, in the hopes that maybe a permanent move could be forthcoming.
But it likely won't, as his best position is left guard.
So is there enough reason to think that Guyton or Thomas can become the player the Cowboys' offense needs at one of the most important positions? Right now, you'd have to say no.
So, is there a move the Cowboys could make this offseason that could ease some of the fears?
There might be.
What about free agent tackle Taylor Decker?
Sports Illustrated's Gilberto Manzano thinks he could join a contender.
"There aren’t many available starting spots for tackles," Manzano wrote. "If Decker wants to play in his age-33 season, it might be wise for him to join a contender and wait for an opportunity to develop."
So while Manzano didn't like Decker to Dallas as it isn't a contender, I think it could be a phone call worth making.
If anything, it would provide depth and a veteran player who is good for 14 games per season. Is that something Dallas could be interested in?
Now, money would be a factor, and Spotrac.com has his calculated market value at $21 million APY. No one is paying that.
But what about, say, a cheap deal for Decker to come in and not only be an insurance policy, but also provide some veteran leadership to Guyton and Thomas, both of whom are still in the early stages of their careers?
On paper it feels like a move that could be beneficial to both.
Decker wouldn't be asked to be "the" guy (great if he wanted to be), he can ease himself into the season, and be a plug-and-play option for Schottenheimer.
If Guyton and Thomas struggle, you have a veteran who can come in and calm everything down.
The offensive line did have problems last season, and Decker, while not likely anyone's first choice to fix the position, could be a shrewd signing to help fortify the offensive line.
