Pettine might have only been in the building for a couple of days, but he's already getting a bead on what Parker's unit does well and what it doesn't.

This week's Dallas Cowboys' hiring of Mike Pettine to be a sounding board and top defensive assistant for Christian Parker is already bearing fruit.

Granted, we are yet to see this defense with the input of Pettine on an NFL field - that comes on Sunday night - but the long-time coach and coordinator has only been in the building for a couple of days, and he's been working feverishly inside The Star.

With Parker remaining on the sidelines and Pettine in the booth on game days, the Cowboys' coaching staff now has a veteran presence to bounce ideas off.

Plus, Pettine can also be useful during the week for game planning, scheme, and anything else he can think of.

Given that he's only been here for a couple of days, Dak Prescott is already noticing a difference.

"Yeah, absolutely, just in the way they've approached it, bringing in a new coach, you've already seen some of his scheme added to what they're doing," Dak said.

Additionally, our Mike Fisher offers this scoop: The Cowboys rolled onto the practice field this week a big-screen TV, with Parker teaching off film in live time.

"I've never heard of that before,'' Fish reports.

Meanwhile, for Pettine, his role is varying, with head coach Brian Schottenheimer stating he'll work across all three phases, so it won't be solely on defense.

However, for most of the time, that is where Pettine's attention needs to be, especially early in his tenure.

And he's already identified some things about Parker's defense that are likely to change.

"I learned a long time ago, there's football is a game of a million little things," Pettine said. "There's no one magic play to run or it's a lot of the detail stuff, there's been taken a lot of notes, it's things that need to get addressed.

"I think got a pretty good feel now for the roster, and part of the plan needs to be, hey, let's highlight what we do well, and make sure we gear that towards taking away just typical game plan stuff, gearing, take away what the opponent does well. So yeah, it's a lot of little things."

So, the hiring of Pettine will hopefully see a better Dallas defense moving forward over the next couple of months.

Dak is already seeing the differences, plus with the personnel changes Schottenheimer spoke about, the winds of change have blown through The Star, and in truth, they needed to.

For Parker's defense, they have been so bad through five weeks that it is hard to envision it being worse, and with the hiring of Pettine, it better not.
