It appears that all of the smoke over a potential move was nothing more than fodder.
Over the past week, the Dallas Cowboys have been mentioned as one team that could be looking at outside help to improve the roster as OTAs began.
One name we heard was Arizona Cardinals edge rusher Josh Sweat.
Reportedly upset with the fact that Jonathan Gannon got fired, there was a thought that for the right price, Sweat could be available.
This, of course, sent tongues wagging among Dallas fans as Christian Parker's defense is a little light on edge rushers, and Sweat, while he would cost a pretty penny, having previously worked with Parker in Philadelphia, could be quite the fit.
But that was just buzz and rumors, we never really heard anything substantial.
And here comes NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, who sent out a post on X regarding Sweat, and well, it certainly puts to bed any chance of a move for the edge rusher, whether it be from Dallas or any other team.
"This has gained some steam on social media, so just to provide some clarity: #AZCardinals edge rusher Josh Sweat is not being traded. Not to the #Packers or anywhere. Carry on…"
So, there you have it. Case closed. Sweat isn't going anywhere.
Yes, I can hear you say What about the Cleveland Browns and Myles Garrett? The franchise stated it wasn't going to trade him, and then look what happened.
So until the trade deadline has come and gone, there are always going to be those who like Sweat to the Cowboys, despite what Rapoport says.
But for our own Mike Fisher, Rapoport saying what he did is enough to put a line through any link between Sweat and Dallas.
"Ian Rapoport's usually right," Fish said on The Fish Report. "If he decided to stick his neck out this far and say Joshua's not being traded with no asterisks or qualifiers after that, then for me that means that he has it on good authority from people in Arizona that they're going to work that thing out.
"So, I'm going to quit using up my valuable breath connecting as an idea the Cowboys and Josh Sweat."
How the next few weeks play out will be an interesting watch, as now that Sweat has been crossed off the list, Pittsburgh Steelers defender Alex Highsmith, who could be the odd man out, is getting attention as a possible move.
Will something come from that? Your guess is as good as mine, but one thing we can all agree on, and that's Sweat to Dallas is dead in the water...if it even was really alive as an idea at all.
