We often hear of recently retired players talking to the younger generation to make the most of the time you have in the NFL because it can all go away quickly, and for Dallas Cowboys receiver CeeDee Lamb, he got a little glimpse into that reality in Week 14.
Of course, some young players think they are bulletproof, but the NFL is an unforgiving beast and doesn't care if you are a rookie or a seasoned veteran; it can humble you in the worst way.
For Lamb, he was cooking against the Detroit Lions, having six catches and 121 yards before suffering a concussion stretching back for a pass from Dak Prescott in the endzone.
Lamb hit his head and was visibly shaken, and it didn't take long for the medical staff to rule him out of the game.
And for CeeDee, it was a timely reminder that this beautiful game he plays can be taken away in an instant.
"It was a surreal moment for me, and really just a quick experience," Lamb said. "It was a opportunity for me to grow up. It was opportunity for me that this game could be taken away from me at any given time. So give it the credit and my all that it deserves and my brothers that it deserves and overall just always be grateful for each and every opportunity I can step out there."
The harsh reality is that for most NFL players, the shelf life isn't that long in the league, roughly around three or four years, and for the lucky few, that extends to seven plus years, like Lamb.
But given the brutal nature of football and the collisions that happen on an every-down basis, or something as simple as Lamb going for a catch, it can all be taken away in a second.
That is a scary thought, my friends.
And we know how serious concussions are in sports, and what the ramifications could be post-football, and for CeeDee, he now has a greater appreciation every time he steps out onto that field.
Because as heavy-handed and dark as it sounds, you never know when it will be your last time.
