After a rocky rookie season, the young running back is maturing and flashing elite speed, eyeing a pivotal "Thunder and Lightning" role in the Cowboys' revamped 2026 offense.
There is no denying that Dallas Cowboys running back Jaydon Blue didn't have the rookie season he or the franchise wanted in 2025.
Issues with maturity, along with his training habits, led to the Cowboys only having Blue suit up for five games, as the learning curve was steep.
But now, as we turn to 2026, the Cowboys have a clear plan for Blue, and that is to be Javonte Williams' backup. Our own Mike Fisher talks of the "Thunder and Lightning" plan for Blue and Williams, so they want him to win the job.
However, he isn't going to be handed it. He's got to earn it, and that starts at OTAs, on the field and in the classroom.
From all accounts, Blue has been locked in this offseason, maturing in a way that makes us think maybe he can be a key part of Brian Schottenheimer's offense.
But what has Dak Prescott seen from Blue so far?
“Obviously a guy that came on last year that had some moments and flashes but a young guy that's very talented,” Dak said of Blue. “He's growing, his ears are open, he's listening. You get the ball in his hand with his speed, with his ability to make people miss, it can be fun. So, we just got to find ways to do that.”
But for Blue to be able to get on the field, he's got to improve in most areas of his game, and that goes for on and off the field.
Blue's speed and receiving ability are well known, as he was a menace for the Texas Longhorns prior to being drafted, but coming to the NFL, it can be a shock to the system.
Did that happen with Blue? Maybe, as the Cowboys clearly thought he had a lot of things to work on.
But now, as training camp comes into view, Blue detailed exactly what areas he's gotten better at.
"For me, just making sure I'm practicing the right way, whether that's finishing the right way, setting the standard, and making sure that I'm finishing runs," Blue said. "I think that was the biggest part, the maturity thing, man. I just think I'm [a] completely different person than what I was at this time last year.”
So Blue is saying all the right things, and to our eye, doing all the right things as well, but as we know, this is the underwear Olympics, the true test will be out in Oxnard.
If Jaydon maintains the rage in training camp, then I'd imagine he will become a key weapon for Schottenheimer and Dak to utilize throughout the season.
