When the Dallas Cowboys signed Joe Milton from the New England Patriots via trade, we all knew that, like Trey Lance, this was a dart throw.
The difference was Milton's athleticism and his rocket arm.
We saw Joe play in Dallas' preseason games. At first, he was erratic, but as the games went on, we saw Milton settle in and look a little better.
No, he's not going to overtake Dak Prescott as the Cowboys starter; instead, Joe is the backup and will likely be for as long as Dak is in Dallas.
Being a sponge, Milton is learning from Prescott and taking everything on board, so that when he does get his chances, as he did in 2025 to mop up games, he can put good things on film.
Most of us know what Milton is as a player. A pure project, and one that maybe one day could develop into something substantial.
Also, his standing on the depth chart isn't really in doubt either, or so we thought.
Heavy.com's Jonathan Vankin seems to think that because the Cowboys signed Will Grier to a reserves/futures contract, that now all of a sudden Joe's position as Dak's backup is in doubt.
This comes after Milton beat out Grier for that exact position last offseason.
Part of Vankin's article includes a sentence, "Milton’s Grip on Prescott Backup Job Loosens," and for most of us, we know that is simply not the case.
Just because Grier was signed to a reserve/futures contract has nothing to do with Milton. It's likely to get a third quarterback on the roster for the offseason.
Plus, the Cowboys still have two years of contractual control over Milton, who is still on his rookie deal.
As far as Milton's backup job being in jeopardy, there is nothing to gain from giving Grier extra reps with the first-team this offseason; Dallas already knows what it has with Will.
His floor and ceiling are set.
But as for Joe and his arm that has launched an 82-yard rocket in practice? His ceiling can be anything he wants it to be.
Grier's signing likely doesn't impact Joe at all because he beat out Grier for that role last offseason. So what makes Dallas think that after another year in the system, Grier would suddenly improve and Joe regress?
So no, Milton's job as Dak's backup isn't in jeopardy.
