It hasn't been the best fortnight for Dallas Cowboys receiver George Pickens.
After setting the league on fire as he had back-to-back games of 140+ yards in huge, season-defining games, in the past two weeks, Pickens' form has dropped.
He hasn't surpassed 40 yards in eirher of the last two games, and against the Minnesota Vikings, you would have hardly known he was out there.
But maybe that is part and parcel of playing so well. Teams will look to take you away.
Indeed, when asked the reason for his form dip, Pickens gave an honest, yet odd answer.
"Yeah, just double coverage," Pickens said. "It's really that simple. Offensively, all we can do is just try to execute at a high level, no matter what that is."
Is that all it takes?
A defense to play double coverage and you take an All-Pro talent like George Pickens completely out of the game?
For Dallas' sake, Cowboys Nation hopes not. It is up to the coaching staff to find ways to get him the ball, and they have three weeks to do it.
But after such a great season up until the Detroit Lions game, where George was one of the best receivers in football, it didn't take long for the pitchforks to come out.
And in a sense, Pickens says that it felt like people were just waiting for him to have a bad game to pile on.
"I mean that's definitely what it felt like, but I can't really get into that," Pickens said. "Everybody got a job to do. Some people job is to do that, just tear down character, see how much clicks they can get. But I'm just here to play football, help the team, honestly.''
The criticism, he said after a bit of media prompting, is "Starting to get kind of old."
Well, there is an easy fix for the George -- play better.
Granted, he is facing something he hasn't in his career before, both on and off the field. So this is a learning experience for Pickens, and with three games left and a potential big contract in the offseason, he'd better learn fast.
Because if double coverage is all that is needed to take him out of a game, guess what he'll see for the rest of his career?
