Everything is new on defense for Dallas, but tackle Quinnen Williams is already seeing what the group is accomplishing.
The big storyline this offseason for the Dallas Cowboys has been the defense and what Christian Parker is trying to build in his first year.
With a handful of new players (roughly 15), along with a revamped coaching staff, the winds of change have blown through The Star on defense, and in truth, it needed to.
Tasked with improving the worst defense in football, Parker's job isn't exactly easy, but as minicamp has now concluded, we can already see some of the positive strides being made.
The defense has made life tough for the offense, and communication has been a big emphasis. Then, with players like Kenny Clark and Quinnen Williams having a full offseason, they are expected to be better versions of themselves.
But from a productivity standpoint, how has Quinnen seen the offseason to date?
“From a defensive standpoint, I think it's been tremendous,” Williams said. “Especially bringing in the young guys, rookies, etc. And then the new guys like Rashan Gary, me having a full offseason. Kenny [Clark], the other defensive guys, D-Mo [Overshown] fully and healthy this offseason, Dee Winters a new guy who coming in and stepping up, and just as a unit trying to get better and be better."
So, there are a lot of good things to take away from the offseason work so far, and Cowboys Nation will hope that will continue into Oxnard.
Last season, the defense was woeful under Matt Eberflus, with constant breakdowns, big plays given up on the ground and in the air, not to mention big problems with communication and giving up 30 points a game.
And for Williams, the unit knows it wasn't great last season, but he's praised the new coaching staff for how they've gone about their business.
“We know we wasn't good last year and we know we got a long way to go to be able to compete and to be able to do the things we can do that we know we can do as a unit and having a whole new defensive staff who's hungry, who want to win and who know how to win and experience level on how to win," Williams said.
"So, I think its been a great offseason for us as a defensive unit to be able to get better, to compete against a great offense, to learn and to grow."
So again, more positivity is coming out from the locker room on what Parker is trying to do defensively.
Yes, it has been largely against air, and the true test of what is being built will be seen in Oxnard when it is "real football," but right now, the vibes are good, and for a defense that was embarrassing last season, that's a start.
With tremendous productivity being key in what fans hope will be a defensive turnaround in 2026.
