Grier was with the Panthers this offseason trying to make the team, but he has since retired and is now back with the Cowboys as a coach.
Some things in life you don't see coming, but one thing our own Mike Fisher saw coming for the Dallas Cowboys was Will Grier's future.
With Grier, a former Cowboy, trying to make the Carolina Panthers roster this offseason, there was always a chance that he wasn't going to make the cut, and if that happened, there was a logical path for the veteran to take -- become a coach.
We know of Grier's relationship with Dak Prescott and Brian Schottenheimer, so when the Panthers cut Grier, and he announced his retirement, we all knew what that next step was.
And as it turns out, Fish was right. Grier would become a coach with the Cowboys and it has now been made official.
Grier will be an offensive assistant for Schottenheimer as he returns to the franchise where he was with the team for a couple of seasons, mostly as a backup/third string QB.
Grier reportedly had a job offer to be a coach for the Cowboys earlier in the offseason, but wanted one more chance at trying to make an NFL roster, hence the move to Carolina.
But now that the ship has sailed on that and he's retired, his coaching career can begin on one of the best offenses in football.
Having been there or thereabouts on the Cowboys roster for the past couple of seasons, often getting cut and then re-signed, he has spent the majority of his time in Dallas on the practice squad.
Grier managed just two starts in his career (0-2) as a third-round selection by the Panthers in 2019, and threw for 228 yards and 4 interceptions.
As a Cowboy, we remember his final preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders in 2023 as he was putting himself in the shop window.
Grier would lead the Cowboys to a 31-16 win, and was 29 of 35 for 305 yards and 2 TDs, while also rushing for 53 yards and 2 TDs from 10 carries with Dak as his play-caller.
Now returning to Dallas to begin his coaching career, Grier is seen as a good offensive mind and one that will be a nice addition to Schottenheimer's staff in 2026.
