FRISCO - Dallas Cowboys icon Jason Witten is making his move up the coaching ladder as he has reportedly accepted a job to serve as the tight ends coach at the University of Oklahoma.
Witten, 43, represents a coup for the program. A 17-year pro with the Cowboys (with a cup of coffee with the Raiders thrown in), Witten has been discussed as a future head coach at his alma mater at Tennessee and as a future staffer with the Cowboys, where team owner Jerry Jones has labeled Witten one of his favorite all-time players and people.
Jones has playfully compared Witten to the legendary Western movie star John Wayne.
Most recently, Witten has been the head coach at Liberty Christian School in Argyle - coaching his sons - since 2021.
In his last four high school seasons, Witten compiled a record of 44-7, with state championships in 2023 and '24.
Witten's sons have been pivotal to that success. CJ Witten is now a defensive end at Rice, and Cooper Witten is a star linebacker in the 2027 class who could land in Norman with his dad.
Witten is a Cowboys legend, a two-time First-Team All-Pro, an 11-time Pro Bowler and the NFL's Man of the Year in 2012.
He was recently named one of the 15 finalists for the 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame class in his first year of eligibility.
A third-round pick in the 2003 NFL Draft, Witten came to embody what it was to "be a Cowboy'' as he was an iron man in addition to being is the Cowboys' all-time leader in receptions, receiving yards, and games played.
