There were serious doubts when the Dallas Cowboys signed running back Javonte Williams in the offseason to a one-year, $3 million prove-it deal, with the former Denver Bronco coming here while some questooned if he was fully over his injury troubles.
Well, this season, Javonte has been superb as the bellcow for coach Brian Schottenheimer's 13th-ranked rushing offense.
His shifty and bruising style has been well-received by Cowboys Nation, and in the 44-30 loss to the Detroit Lions, Williams hit the mark he had been searching for his whole career.
The famed 1,000-yard mark.
With his 67 rushing yards, Javonte moved past 1,000 yards to 1,022.
"Yeah, it feel good to finally reach that milestone after all the stuff that I've been through, but I wish we could have just got the win and play a little bit better, execute a little bit better on both sides,” Williams said.
Unfortunately for Williams, the milestone came in a rough loss that dealt a huge blow to the 6-6-1 Cowboys' playoff chances.
Still, with over 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns on the season, there's no denying that the move for Williams has been a resounding success, and all eyes will be on Dallas to see what the franchise does next year.
“It's a good milestone, after all the hard work I put in, to finally reach it, it's a blessing, but I know I still got work to do," Williams added. "We still got a lot of games left, so we just got to keep our head down and keep going.”
Williams will no doubt have a role to play down the stretch, with the Cowboys finally having a semblance of a run game after a few poor years in that department.
Free-agent-to-be Javonte is having a career year with the Cowboys, and there's no denying that the club believes he deserves to stick around beyond 2025.
But as we know, the salary cap is a factor here.
But in Williams, Dallas has a leading man for the rushing attack, and he's only 25 years old, so there's still plenty of tread left on the tires.
It has been a great season for Williams, and with four games left, there's a good chance it's about to get even better.
