Pickens' future is still a topic of discussion for the Cowboys.
When the Dallas Cowboys made it clear they wouldn't negotiate with Pro Bowe receiver George Pickens on a new deal, instead slapping the franchise tag on him, many thought his days were numbered in Dallas.
But Pickens has been a model citizen this offseason as he plays on the $27.3 million tag in 2026. In fact, he's been the best player for the entire offseason, making life hell for Christian Parker's defense.
However, George's future beyond 2026 is never far from the thoughts of fans and the media alike.
If Pickens has another Pro Bowl season, any contract offer next season will likely start with a four, unless Dallas tags him again (roughly $33 million), making it an expensive exercise.
But it's one the Cowboys can do if they want to.
And speaking on 105.3 The Fan, owner Jerry Jones might have just dropped an "Easter egg'' when it comes to Pickens' future with the team.
"Well, George has had a top, top camp, and has just been everything we could have asked him to be for where we are as we go into this first game week," Jerry said when asked about Pickens' offseason.
"I'm excited about what he brings to the table for us. I'm excited what he's got a chance to do for us this year and coming years. And I emphasize that, and coming years."
Hmm, ok Jerry.
"Coming years," stands out.
Now, that could simply be this year and then next year with Pickens tagged again, but I wonder if there isn't something bubbling below the surface, because this isn't the first time we've heard Jerry mention something like this.
Indeed, our Cowboys insider Mike Fisher is insisting that Jones has over the years enjoyed "dropping an Easter egg'' into media visits ... hints that he views as part of the game, part of the fun'' of his job - and of your fandom.
COO Stephen Jones stated it would be hard to pay two receivers top-of-the-market money, but we know it can be done. And Dallas can have the financial flexibility to do it if it wants to.
There is a feeling that 2026 could still be George's last as a Cowboy, but there is also a small hint that maybe it might not be.
We know Pickens loves his teammates and coaches, and maybe that might be a key reason he stays, perhaps on less money, and it is clear that Jerry, at least right now, appears more interested in keeping George long-term.
