The pitchforks are out for Schottenheimer after the Cardinals loss, and Irvin didn't hold back in his assessment.
You know things are bad for the Dallas Cowboys when Mr. Positivity himself, Michael Irvin, isn't feeling great about the team.
Usually the Cowboys' biggest and loudest and most positive booster, Irvin, on his latest appearance on ESPN's First Take, went another direction.
With head coach Brian Schottenheimer in the crosshairs of everyone after yet another failure both as a head coach and play-caller, this time it was Stephen A. Smith doing his bit.
Yeah, fine, we've seen and heard it all before. It's a performance. An act.
But when Irvin talks, we listen.
And when it came for Irvin's time to speak on the coaching of Schottenheimer, there was no energy, no excitement; it was a "down" Irvin.
But it was what he said about the state of the Cowboys and Schottenheimer that should have everyone's ears pricked up, including Jerry and Stephen Jones, because Michael isn't one to say things for the sake of it.
"This is no worse than you can be right now," Irvin said on First Take. "There is no such thing as lower than this, or worse. They are the worst. So, anybody, my dead mom can coach them better."
Pearl Irvin died in 2015. And while Michael is exaggerating to make a point? The point is a powerful one.
It is clear that Schottenheimer is over his head, and that isn't just me talking. That is people who have covered this team for decades - those in the know, with contacts inside the building who are saying this.
We have heard Schottenheimer state after nearly every game that it "starts with me" and "I've got to be better," but if you are saying that after eight weeks, that is a huge problem, right?
With calls for Jerry to move on from Schottenheimer, and let me be clear, I don't like the idea of someone losing their job, their way to provide for their family, but unless Dallas goes on a winning run, wins the division, and a playoff game, the die has already been cast for 2027; Schottenheimer can't come back next year.
Some have asked if Dallas does move on from Schottenheimer, who will the franchise get to replace him in the interim? Stephen A. votes for out-of-work Rex Ryan. How about just-hired aide Mike Pettine? How about young coordinator Christian Parker? That would make Cowboys Nation riot, and Klayton Adams is another staff name who seems underqualified.
In truth, there doesn't appear to be anyone ready-made to step up if needed.
But as our own Mike Fisher has stated - as he's now joined by Irvin in sharing this sentiment - it can't get any worse.
And if someone's mother, who has passed away, is seen as a better coach, albeit tongue-in-cheek by Michael, well, I think we all know how this story seems likely to end.
