The Cowboys have added two undrafted free agent tight ends to their roster, ahead of what is a pivotal offseason for Brian Schottenheimer.
Even after the NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys have continued to add to their roster, signing a handful of undrafted free agents, with two catching the eye.
TCU tight end DJ Rogers and Baylor's Michael Trigg will join the room coached by Lunda Wells, and the moves could have been made with something in mind.
And for me, it might be to put the pressure on Luke Schoonmaker, who, as a second-round pick, has yet to truly blossom in the NFL.
But back to the two UDFA's. ... with our Mike Fisher labeling them in combination the "most fascinating'' transactions of the weekend.
For Rogers, he's coming off a career-best season with TCU, posting 319 yards and 2 TDs from 34 receptions, so he was a decent option on offense.
Seen by scouts as a tight end who has good strength and has the speed to get downfield and be a vertical threat in the short to intermediate passing game, Rogers brings something steady to the offense.
A developmental prospect for the Cowboys, Rogers might have his work cut out for him in Oxnard, but he's got the tools to make a good fist of it.
Now to Trigg, and perhaps this is where the excitement levels of Cowboys Nation will rise.
Seen as a walking highlight reel by scouts, Trigg is an athletic monster who is more of a receiving tight end than a blocking tight end, and his numbers back that up.
At 6'4 and 240 lbs, Trigg is a matchup nightmare, and for Baylor last season, he posted 694 yards and 6 TDs from 50 receptions, easily the best return of his college career.
Yes, there are some reported maturity concerns, but glossing over social media and looking at what scouts think, if Trigg can iron out the deficiencies in his game and stay focused, there's a good player in there.
Granted, he'll have to prove that the maturity concerns are nothing to worry about, and if he can step into Brian Schottenheimer's offense in training camp and be productive, who knows what Trigg could become.
Boasting an elite catch radius, when the ball is in his area, more often than not, Trigg comes down with it.
Far from the finished product, as scouts see a lot of room for improvement, Wells will have to get down to business with Trigg, but make no mistake, if everything aligns, Trigg could be productive for the Cowboys.
With Jake Ferguson, Brevyn Spann-Ford, and Schoonmaker, it will be tough to make many inroads on the depth chart, but Trigg and Rogers both have a chance to compete this offseason.
And as an undrafted free agent, that's all you can ask for.
