Jerry Jones is hunting for veteran stars, signaling a willingness to sacrifice draft capital for immediate defensive impact as training camp sparks high-stakes trade speculation in Dallas.
OXNARD, Calif. - The Dallas Cowboys, whether the critics like to concede it or not - have been far more aggressive in player acquisition than in previous years. ... a trend toward fiscal conservatism dating back more than 15 years.
Granted, there hasn't been the Maxx Crosby-type level of acquisition (yet), but the Cowboys this offseason have added veteran pieces like Rashan Gary, Cobie Durant, Jalen Thompson and others for the defense.
So as training camp gets set to begin, fans can feel good about the roster as it is currently presented; however, that doesn't mean fans want the front office to sit on its hands.
With a need at edge and linebacker, the Cowboys can always make some moves to bolster the roster even further.
And as it turns out, owner Jerry Jones promises he isn't going to be shy about trading away future capital if it means getting something substantial to help his team in 2026.
"I'd give up future to add substantive to where we are today to get the right kind of deal to improve us opening day," Jerry said during Tuesday's "State of the Cowboys'' address here in Oxnard.
"I would, I feel that good about this team this year, and of course, I haven't seen this team play together, but in general, looking ahead, I think we've got a chance to be worthy of spending some future if we saw an opportunity."
So that could mean going back for Crosby. Or adding someone like Bobby Wagner or Josh Sweat or a surplus Steelers pass rusher, all ideas that have been justifiably linked with Dallas at different points this offseason.
There is logic in thinking the Cowboys might sit on their hands for the first couple of weeks of camp to assess what they have in their employ before making any moves to bolster the roster.
However, when asked if that is the path the team will take, Jerry made quite the statement.
"I talked about a situation with another team and another owner yesterday," he noted, while using the word "fireworks'' to detail the sort of player he'll be in search of.
So Jerry is already putting the feelers out on a potential move. A blockbuster move. A "fireworks'' move.
The Dallas Cowboys, it seems, are open for business.
