While KaVontae Turpin’s speed remains undisputed, debate rages over his offensive utility as the Cowboys struggle to balance his explosive return skills with a growing receiving role.

We know of his talents as a returner; an All-Pro with blazing speed, Turpin is the very definition of a nightmare in the return game.
Or he was.
Last season saw Turpin look like a shadow of himself, with several penalties returning punts, and I think his down year as a returner had a lot to do with his increased reps on offense.
When you have a player as fast as Turpin, who offers home-run speed, it is only natural to see what he can do for you in the passing game.
Dak Prescott's 86-yard bomb to Turpin against the Washington Commanders last season was really the only receiving highlight for Turpin for the year.
When looking at the Cowboys' roster, you can make the case that Turpin is a well-known commodity, and ESPN's Aaron Schatz lists KaVontae as a non-starter to know in 2026.
"We know he's one of the best kick return men in the NFL, but Turpin has also been extremely useful as a depth receiver, with receiving DVOA over 15.0% in two of the past three seasons," Schatz wrote. "Last season, he caught 26 passes for 396 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 2.3 YAC over expectation."
Now, Mr. Schatz, "extremely useful" is a bit of a stretch here. And plus, most know Turpin already.
Turpin posted 396 yards and 2 TDs from 26 receptions, none of which was an improvement on his 2024 efforts under McCarthy. Why am I bringing that up?
He had more offensive snaps under first-year Brian Schottenheimer and fewer special-teams snaps.
As a 5-9 receiver, he is a good gadget guy, posting 15.2 yards per reception, so he can be a chain mover. However, moonlighting as a receiver is perhaps his best role, not being a proper option in the passing game.
We know stats can be massaged to prove any point you want, and last season, was Turpin "extremely useful" as a receiver? I think that's a little bit of a stretch.
