The Cowboys need defensive help, so why not go out and land a big fish no one is expecting?

The Dallas Cowboys' offseason is going to have a distinct defensive flavor, and rightly so.

After a 2025 season that was horrific for Matt Eberflus' defense, it is now Christian Parker's job to come in and try to clean up this mess.

A change in system has already been mentioned, and now comes the exciting part for both franchise and fans: free agency.

We have heard how the Cowboys are in for Maxx Crosby and possibly Trey Hendrickson. Only if the price is right, however.

With a clear need at several positions, such as linebacker, pass rusher, corner, and safety, Dallas has the cap space and draft capital to make some serious moves.

And yes, Crosby and Hendrickson are the big names dominating the headlines at the moment, and rightly so.

But Art Stapleton of Northjersey.com has just dropped a little nugget of information that has made our ears prick up.

The San Francisco 49ers might be willing to trade four-time All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner.

“I don’t know if San Francisco will trade Warner. Heard they might consider it if somehow they could get Dre Greenlaw back in the fold. I’m not playing games like some are suggesting on here,” Stapleton posted on X

So, Warner, if things go the right way for Dallas, might be available for trade.

If you want to give Parker a quarterback for his defense, Warner is your guy.

Yes, he struggled with an injury in 2025, suffering a dislocated and fractured right ankle, but there's no denying the quality he possesses.

Prior to 2025, Warner played all 17 games in three straight seasons, being a dynamic playmaker for the 49ers' defense.

His high-level football IQ allows him to quickly diagnose plays before becoming a heat-seeking missile, coupled with his elite pass coverage ability, would make him a superb get for Dallas.

Yes, age is a factor here, being 30, plus his contract, which sees his camp number be $17 million in 2026 ($1.6 million base salary), then $29 million in 2027, and his base salary jumps to $15.3 million.

That is pricey, and the Cowboys could restructure his deal, but that isn't ideal, especially after all the restructures already.

Still, if Jerry Jones really does want to "bust the budget," getting Warner to quarterback Parker's defense is a great move.

What the 49ers will want in return is also a key thing here, but if there is a shred of evidence that San Francisco could be looking to move on from Warner, Dallas should be one of the first to make a call.
