The Cowboys need defensive help, and need it in several areas, but what is the best-case scenario for Dallas in the first round?
The Dallas Cowboys' first-round approach, for most, is as clear as water. It has to be focused on defense.
Yes, we get the BPA (best player available) approach, but as our own Mike Fisher has stated, if the "tags are touching" between an offensive and a defensive player, Dallas should go defense.
Still with needs at linebacker, edge, and corner, the Cowboys have two first-round picks to be able to address two of those areas.
But which player Dallas should be targeting at No. 12 is a fascinating discussion point.
We have Sonny Styles, Rueben Bain Jr., Caleb Downs, Mansoor Delane, David Bailey, and Jermod McCoy as possible options.
But picking at No. 12, there is a fair chance that most of those mentioned will be off the board.
So, what is an ideal draft scenario for the Cowboys?
For Bleacher Report's Alex Ballentine, it's Bain Jr. falling into their laps.
"The Commanders get caught up in the concerns about Rueben Bain Jr.'s lack of length and pass on him, letting Dallas stop his slide at No. 12," Ballentine wrote. "Then they double down on defense and grit with Avieon Terrell at No. 20."
Getting one of the best pass rushers in the draft isn't a bad scenario for the Cowboys, is it?
A terror along the defensive line, Bain's power and high motor see him living in the offensive backfield as he looks to collect quarterbacks' souls. An All-American for the Miami Hurricanes last season, Bain recorded 9.5 sacks and 15.5 tackles for loss, a monster along the defensive line.
His ability to be relentless in his pursuit of the quarterback makes him a nightmare to go against in the passing game, which is something the Cowboys desperately need.
What's Bain himself think of all of this?
“It’d be amazing,” Bain said about possibly landing in Dallas. “Any opportunity I can get, no matter where I’m playing, it’d be a blessing. I’ve already made myself familiar with the (AT&T Stadium) grounds. It’d be an amazing opportunity.”
But his making it to No. 12 does seem like a dream rather than reality, but in this best-case scenario, the Cowboys - despite Bain's "short wingspan'' problem - might be licking their lips if Bain falls to them.
A likely Day 1 starter for Parker, Bain has all the tools to bring some much-needed pass rush juice to a Dallas defense that was void of it last season.
