Could the Cowboys snag Fred Warner? Unpacking the 49ers' potential willingness and the surprising origin of this blockbuster linebacker rumor.

FRISCO - In tossing out names of linebackers who could help the Dallas Cowboys - driven by the fact that Dallas has started off this week of NFL free agency whiffing in its attempts to add there - I mentioned on X the name of San Francisco 49ers stalwart Fred Warner.

But why? Is this just a rumor? And where did it come from?

Let me walk you through it ...

After a 2025 season that was horrific for Matt Eberflus' defense, it is now new coordinator Christian Parker's job to come in and try to clean up this mess.

A change in system has already been noted (welcome to the "3-4 Hybrid''!), and Dallas has bolstered itself at two of the three levels on defense with the trade for Packers EDGE Rashan Gary and the signing of Cardinals safety Jalen Thompson.

But at linebacker? They didn't get Quay Walker (Packers to Raiders) or Nakobe Dean (Eagles to Raiders) or Devin Lloyd (Jaguars to Panthers).

They are talking about a cheap trade for the Steelers' Patrick Queen.

But what if they go another way? A bigger way?

Art Stapleton of Northjersey.com recently dropped a little nugget of information that has made my ears prick up.

Would the 49ers be willing to trade four-time All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner?

“I don’t know if San Francisco will trade Warner. Heard they might consider it if somehow they could get Dre Greenlaw back in the fold. I’m not playing games like some are suggesting on here,” Stapleton posted on X

Greenlaw just got cut by Denver.

There is a report that teams are checking in with the Niners on Warner.

This much is true: If you want to give Parker a quarterback for his defense, perennial team captain Warner is as good as it gets.

Yes, he struggled with an injury in 2025, suffering a dislocated and fractured right ankle, but there's no denying the quality he possesses.

Prior to 2025, Warner played all 17 games in three straight seasons, being a dynamic playmaker for the 49ers' defense.

His high-level football IQ allows him to quickly diagnose plays before becoming a heat-seeking missile, and coupled with his elite pass coverage ability, would make him a superb get for Dallas.

Age isn't much of a factor here; he's 29. But his contract, which sees his cap numbers at $17 million this year and $29 million in 2027, is burdensome.

That's the only reason I can see for the Niners to even consider a move.

As we enter Tuesday's Day 2 of the start of NFL free agency, there are other names to kick around. How about Bobby Wagner, Bobby Okereke, Leo Chanal or Kaden Elliss.

Still, if Jerry Jones really does want to "bust the budget," calling on Warner is a great move.

Would the 49ers even listen? Is there real evidence that San Francisco could be looking to move on from Warner?

What there is, is - I'll frame it carefully and properly - a rumor. And now you know the origin of it.
