The Dallas Cowboys had a solid run-game this past season after having the fifth-fewest rushing yards in 2024. Javonte Williams had a breakout season, but he still might not be the running back of the future.
And if Jerry Jones and company believe he's not, they could go after one in the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft.
In a recent mock draft by PFF's Jordan Plocher, he has them doing just that in the first round. But instead of taking one at No. 12, he thinks they could trade all the way up to third overall and draft Notre Dame star running back Jeremiyah Love.
"Cowboys fans who know the roster have already grabbed torches and pitchforks to revolt at the idea of this, but it isn’t out of the realm of possibilities," Plocher writes. "Yes, the defense would be better off if Dallas spends its two first-round picks on defensive players, but adding Love to the mix with Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens creates a lethal offense with a terrifying set of offensive skill players. It's fun to think about."
If Dallas wanted to take Love, they could sit back and hope he falls—or they could take control and go up and get him.
Love racked up 1,372 yards and 18 rushing touchdowns in his junior season with the Fighting Irish. But not only that, he was also able to show off his versatility with just under 300 yards and three touchdowns through the air.
Him being able to contribute in the passing game is something that Dak Prescott has shown that he likes, which could mean that Love would be an "ideal" fit with America's Team.
The Cowboys could very well just do what most think that they will and draft mostly defense, especially in the first round. But thinking of what it could be like if Dallas had a dual-headed dragon like Love and Williams is admittedly pretty exciting.
But if the team ultimately decides to have Javonte be the running back of the future and they go heavy on the defensive side of the draft, nobody will bat an eye.
