Roster cuts are coming soon, and with the squeeze for positions getting tight, could the Cowboys move some players who still have value?
This Dallas Cowboys roster will have some unlucky players who won't make the final 53-man roster when cut day ends.
Some are fan favorites, others are some who people want to see the back of.
The Cowboys still have two preseason games to sift through and work out who deserves to survive the cut and who doesn't.
Of course, that means other teams could be in for those players for free once the cut is made, but what if the Cowboys decided to try and get something in return for "name players'' who they might deem on the edge of the roster bubble?
Our own Mike Fisher did this exercise with four guys, all of them former Day 2 draft picks, all of whom might have some sort of trade value if the Cowboys put them on the market.
Let's go through them.
Sam Williams:
The signing of Von Miller could push Sam down the depth chart, and while I get the idea of "you can never have enough pass rushers," when it comes to Sam, would he have some value in the trade market?
What if you went back to the Las Vegas Raiders and threw Williams in as a sweetener in a deal for Maxx Crosby?
With Donovan Ezeiruaku, Miller, James Houston, Rashan Gary and rookie Malachi Lawrence all in the mix with Sam, could/should the Cowboys put the feelers out there?
Luke Schoonmaker:
If you took a poll from Cowboys Nation, Schoonmaker is likely the No. 1 player fans want off the roster. He's a good guy, but as a former second-round pick, he just hasn't produced.
Michael Trigg has done some good things in camp, but are you ready to trust the UDFA over Schoony? If Trigg plays well in Arizona, you might get your answer.
Could Dallas use Schoony as a sweetener in a deal for say, Maxx Crosby or Jordyn Brooks or Josh Sweat? We've often stated that, given how Luke has performed, we don't know who will want to trade for him, but who knows- someone might.
Right now, he's TE3, and if Trigg plays well, come this time next week, he very well might be TE4.
Marist Liufau:
Like Williams, if Marist is seen as an edge instead of a linebacker, things could get tight when it comes to his roster spot.
But if Dallas moves him back to linebacker, you could make a case that he could be the fourth or fifth on the depth chart. His rookie season was good, but last year under Matt Eberflus, he was forgotten.
We have seen his talent on show several times in camp, and the hard-hitting defender might have some trade value if Dallas wanted to look at it.
If the Cowboys keep him on the edge, he very well could be in a fight with Williams to keep his spot.
Jonathan Mingo:
Likely in a battle with Camden Brown for the WR5 role, and with Brian Schottenheimer stating he's had a good camp, all Mingo has done is stack good days in Oxnard and then play well against the Seahawks.
If it is Brown who usurps Mingo, could a team look at trying to get him out of Dallas? If he is cut, would he make it back to the practice squad?
It feels like Mingo is finally starting to prove something to the coaching staff, but would he have value in terms of a trade? Maybe.
In fact, as we move toward cutdown day and possible trades, Fish may have nailed four "maybes'' here.
