Cowboys restructure Terence Steele's contract, unlocking crucial cap space. This move signals commitment and frees millions for offseason priorities.

FRISCO - For the Dallas Cowboys, all of their big hitters are taking the big headlines this offseason, and rightly so.

George Pickens and Brandon Aubrey have taken center stage.

But there is other business - cap business - to be done.

We recently reported that the Cowboys preferred to "fix'' Terence Steele rather than to cut him.

We told you the truth.

Steele had his troubles last season and the year before. If they were to cut Steele post June 1, they could save $14 million in cap space.

But no.

Instead, as we reported, the Cowboys think Steele is a keeper.

So ... As first noted by NFL Network, on Monday they restructured his deal. Now he gets a bump in guaranteed money ($22 million) and the del creates about $13 million in additional cap space.

That will keep Dallas under the cap ... with more similar moves to come.

As far as tackles, would Dak Prescott-led Dallas be better served moving Tyler Smith outside? Or by letting Steele and Tyler Guyton continue to work on improvement?

After all, there are bigger needs that the franchise has to address.

But for now? What's on the menu for the Cowboys as free agency begins on Monday with the "legal tampering period'' is ... cap room.
