All the talk about Blue has been about what he can do for the Cowboys' run game, but as one insider has reminded us, there are more strings to Jaydon's bow than just that.
It has been a positive offseason for Dallas Cowboys running back Jaydon Blue, and in truth, it needed to be.
With Blue struggling in his rookie season, with just about everything on and off the field, Jaydon has returned to The Star and, by his own account, is a much better person and player than he was a year ago.
We know of Dallas' plan for him to be the lightning to Javonte Williams' thunder, and much of the focus has been on Blue's ability as a running back.
But 105.3 The Fan's Bobby Belt has given us a reminder that Blue is far more than a one trick pony.
He can be a receiver, like he was at Texas (503 yards, 7 TDs in three seasons), and as we saw last year at times, a returner as well.
So, there are three strings to his bow that Blue could utilize to be a valuable member of Brian Schottenheimer's offense.
But Belt also noted that, given Blue's ability as a receiver and returner, the Cowboys might view him as a cheaper alternative to All-Pro returner KaVontae Turpin.
"We keep talking about him as running back two, which he 100% should be in line to take if he lives up to his potential,” Belt said on 105.3 The Fan. “But think they would love for him to take KaVontae Turpin's job. And I think they think he can do all of that.
"That gadget player that can be in the backfield, in the slot, because he was a pass catcher at Texas, was kind of a difference-maker. He returned some kicks, and he did a little bit of that last year. I think they look at him and go if you could just live up to this, you could be a cheaper solution.
"I think they would love to see him not just take hold of running back two, I think what they would like to see him do is just take the spot that KaVontae Turpin has and be able to get that for cheaper.”
We know what a weapon Turpin can be as a receiver and returner, but he is coming off a poor year, where maybe too much was put on his plate from an offensive standpoint, so maybe in 2026, he focuses on getting back to being the All-Pro returner that scared the entire league.
Blue for me, still remains a work in progress, and as training camp begins in Oxnard, we are going to see exactly how much progress he's made from Year 1 to Year 2, and maybe Belt is right.
Maybe Blue shows that he can be all of the things Turpin is, because in truth, KaVonate's biggest weapon is his speed. He isn't the strongest receiver or runner out of the backfield.
But Blue might be.
Now, will it happen, who knows, but it is certainly something to keep an eye on as minicamp begins and then training camp in a month's time.
Blue as the multi-pronged offensive weapon? That's a storyline to watch.
