The Hall of Fame quarterback slams Dallas for lazy route-running, labeling one unidentified player’s recent effort the worst performance he has ever witnessed on a football field.
The Dallas Cowboys' offense hasn't been good in the past two weeks, with many calling for Brian Schottenheimer to be moved on.
The offense was supposed to be the team's biggest weapon, but over the last two weeks, it hasn't been.
And now, with some thinking that players are giving 100 percent effort, that opens up a whole can of worms, not to mention a narrative that is starting to build.
Former Cowboys quarterback Ben DiNucci called the offense "lazy'' against the Green Bay Packers, which is an indictment of those that Ben is talking about.
And again, the narrative is starting to gather momentum.
But then there's this.
Our own Mike Fisher, in a talk with Cowboys legend and Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman, was asked if Cowboys pass-catchers were running routes as crisply as they once were.
And Troy's answer was damning.
"No, and they haven’t in a while," Aikman said. "I won’t name names, but there’s one particular player, I was embarrassed. It’s the worst performance I’ve ever seen from a receiver on a football field.”
Now it is one thing for DiNucci to say it.
But when Aikman does, and doesn't hold back, that is rather damning. So, he knows which player isn't exactly running routes with the expected effort.
We can all speculate as to who Troy is talking about, and we won't throw names out for the sake of it, as we don't know who Aikman had in his sights.
But for most, most think they have an idea.
Oh, and Troy did say "they,'' so maybe this is a team-wide failure.
With the Cowboys taking on the Philadelphia Eagles on "Monday Night Football,'' all eyes will be on the offense (and a little on defense) to see if there is an uptick in form, because it is desperately needed.
Perhaps the biggest thing that will be a watch for most, including Aikman, who will be calling the game for ESPN, is which Dallas receivers are running their routes properly, and which ones aren't.
George Pickens? CeeDee Lamb? Ryan Flournoy? It's a great chance for the whole bunch to answer the call.
Aikman being "embarrassed'' by what he saw tells you that something is seriously wrong. And make no mistake about it: Aikman isn't in the business of making up outlandish comments for clout.
He's simply commenting on what he's seen.
But we tell you one thing: the route running better not be "embarrassing'' on Monday night, because if it is, and Dallas loses, the aftermath isn't going to be pretty.
