Struggling through a dismal defensive start, the Dallas Cowboys have enlisted veteran "sounding board" Mike Pettine to rescue young coordinator Christian Parker from a baptism by fire.
Prior to Christian Parker taking over for his first game as a defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys, the 2026 hype train was at full speed.
The young hot-shot coordinator was going to out-think and out-work and out-charm the enemy, using his "3-4 Hybrid'' scheme to be the savior of this Dallas defense, with many national media outlets stating that the Cowboys could even have a top-10 defense ... and yes, with plenty of us on a local basis "drinking the Kool-aid'' as well.
But over five games, the Cowboys have assembled nothing more than one of the worst defenses in football.
Again.
And Parker's performance so far makes him nothing more than a cooler version of Matt Eberflus and Mike Nolan.
So this week, the franchise hired Mike Pettine as a "sounding board'' and veteran presence for Parker during the week and on game day.
Who is Pettine (pronounced "PET-in'')? He's 60, had opted for retirement after a long NFL career as a coordinator, has some ties to both head coach Brian Schottenheimer and Parker, and, as one source tells CowboysRoundtable.com ...
"He's a fiery MF'er.''
Throughout the offseason, we've voiced concerns with Parker, 34, as a first-time coordinator; he'd never called an NFL game before, so there were to be growing pains as he navigates his first-ever job in the coordinator chair.
You will recall us predicting in this space before Game 1 at the Giants that the "bright-lights/big-city'' issue might be overwhelming for the coach.
And we predicted correctly.
On Friday, Pettine - wearing the title of "senior defensive assistant'' - spoke to the media for the first time since his hiring and offered insight ... but also mentioned some advice that we think was aimed in Parker's direction as well.
"I think I can help a lot," Pettine said. "I think it's funny; I have a big book - about a 4-inch-thick book of what not to do and a very thin one of what to do. So, I think that's key is to be able to learn from others' mistakes.
"As much as you think you're prepared for it, you're really not till you get into it, and I think that's where I'll be able to help him."
And for the Cowboys, being honest with themselves here? That is key.
This hiring makes it clear that Parker wasn't quite prepared for it.
So here comes Pettine, who the Cowboys hope will smooth this whole thing out and offer his advice in practice and also up in the booth on game days, with Parker on the sideline calling the shots.
The Cowboys are 2-3 as they prep for Sunday night at Green Bay, and maybe the hiring of Pettine can jump-start a defense that - just like last year under different leadership - is among the NFL's worst.
Christian might develop into a superstar coach sometime down the line, but this has been on-the-job training so far ... without a net
So here comes "fiery MF'er'' Pettine to guide this hot-shot coach through some brutal truths about NFL football. ... witht the hope that the "growing'' can outweigh the "pains.''
