Most see Downs as just a safety, but he and the Cowboys have made it clear that he will be playing more than one role for Christian Parker.
New Dallas Cowboys safety Caleb Downs, for some, has already been earmarked for success in the NFL.
Mainly because of what he is projected to be once he hits the field in the pros, but also because of what he can do for a defense, both physically and mentally.
Seen as one of the smartest defensive players in the draft, Downs will be seen as Christian Parker's "quarterback" on defense, with many scouts and draft experts viewing Downs as a player who will keep players in position and will limit the coverage busts we saw last season.
But then there at some who view Downs as a pure safety.
And they think that can limit what he can do on defense, but the Cowboys' coaches have stated that Caleb will do it all. He'll play some nickel; he'll be near the line of scrimmage, blitzing; he'll do whatever is needed.
So, he won't just be a pure safety, he'll be everywhere.
105.3 The Fan's Bryan Broaddus, in talking with Caleb during a recent interview, described Downs as a weapon on defense who can be used in a variety of different roles.
And Downs agreed.
"I would say I'm a defensive player," Downs said. "Being able to play near the line of scrimmage, being able to play in the second level, third level, being able to do a lot of different things, a full-rounded player.
"So, if you're a full-rounded player that can make plays on all facets of your defense and make your defense better. That's who you want on your team, not necessarily just oh I want somebody to be able to set the edge', that's great, but if he doesn't make the play, then it doesn't matter.
"At the end of the day, you want playmakers and that's what I am."
Downs will be looked at as Parker's Swiss Army Knife on defense, and he will be put in different positions throughout a game, and in all likelihood, will play all of them at a high level.
That is why Downs was so highly sought after by Dallas, because the franchise knew the sort of player it would be getting.
Not just a stud on the field with the players he makes, but the mental processing and his ability to get his teammates into the right positions and to have the right communication on the field is second to none.
He's not just a safety; he's a player who can do it all, and Broaddus described him as a sort of "weapon" on defense, and it is hard to argue.
Given his versatility, Parker will have several ways he can deploy his latest weapon, and in any of them, it's not going to be fun playing again Caleb in 2026.
