Irvin made it clear that he wished the Cowboys had brought Aikman on board to help the franchise, as the Dolphins have now done.
For years, we have heard how fans and media alike want the Dallas Cowboys to get the right people into positions within the organization where they could help the football team.
One if those "right people'' often mentioned is Hall of Fame quarterback and Cowboys legend Troy Aikman.
We have heard our own Mike Fisher explain his desire to have Jerry Jones' Cowboys bring Aikman into the fold at The Star, if only just to pick his brain about certain aspects of the football program, because let's be honest, Troy could easily be an NFL general manager.
But not in Dallas.
And while the Cowboys haven't picked up the phone to get Troy into the building in any capacity, the Miami Dolphins have, with Aikman helping the AFC East franchise this offseason with a number of things, including the draft, the choosing of the general manager, and the hiring of a new head coach.
Cowboys Nation's opinion? He should be doing something with the Cowboys.
“It does pain me to see that," Irvin said. "I think it's criminal for any club not to try to just glean as much as you can from a guy like Troy Aikman, whose job is to go talk to teams, talk to coaches, and bring an understanding of what's going on behind the scenes to the world. So he understands each thing that's going on in your organization. There is no better place for information than to get it from a guy like Troy.”
“Troy wanted a John Elway situation here in Dallas. I know he wanted it, and certainly he's earned it. But it's not going to happen. I rest my mind to that reality. I wish Jerry would at least have brought him in."
And I'd imagine there is a fair section of Cowboys Nation that would agree with the "Playmaker" here.
Given how the front office has been run for the past three decades, if there ever was a team that needed someone like Aikman in the building, it's Dallas.
But while the Cowboys didn't want Troy in that sort of role, the Dolphins clearly see the value that Aikman can bring to the football department.
It astonishes me Dallas doesn't.
Have the Cowboys missed the boat here? Absolutely. It should have been Troy helping them, not Miami.
It pains Irvin, like it does most Cowboys fans. But as we know, Jerry Jones has a certain way of doing things and isn't likely to change.
But there's no denying a huge opportunity to pick the brain of one of the greatest quarterbacks ever, who many believe is GM material, and bring him in as a consultant or whatever you want to call it, has been missed by Dallas.
Just chalk it up to another error by this Cowboys front office.
