Gary isn't coming to The Star to make up the numbers; he's coming to make a statement and get this team back to where it belongs.

The Dallas Cowboys' trade for Rashan Gary has been met with varying reactions.

Some think it is a decent enough move, especially after he took a pay cut that now sees him make a little over $5 million in 2026.

Others think giving up a pick for Gary, who the Green Bay Packers were reportedly going to cut, wasn't great, nor was missing out on Maxx Crosby or Trey Hendrickson.

But the Cowboys got Christian Parker, a pass rusher, and a good one.

Yes, much has been made of his 7.5 sacks, all of which came in the first handful of games, before nothing the rest of the way.

But Gary is still a stout defender and brings a lot to Parker's new-look defense.

Exactly what expectations are for Gary aren't known, but he will likely play a pivotal role alongside Quinnen Williams and Kenny Clark for the defense.

But what does Gary see himself doing in his first year with Parker?

"The main thing for me is to come in, play good ball and play good ball to the point that we're playing meaningful games," Gary said via Garrett Podell of CBS Sports. "Then, playing for some trophies and playing for some hats and T-shirts [things that come with winning the division, NFC and the Super Bowl]. That's my goal."

So Gary is intent on making this defense good enough for the team to challenge for the Super Bowl.

That is a bold task, but in truth, did we expect anything else?

The offense was elite last season, and the hope is that it will continue in 2026. It is just up to the defense to pull its weight.

And we aren't talking about it going from the 32nd-ranked defense to No. 5, but to be 15th? Middle of the pack? Would that be good enough?

We think so.

And Gary will have to play a key role in the defensive turnaround for Dallas, because let's face it, there are still a host of needs that have to be addressed, and if they aren't, it could be tough sledding.

The Cowboys have had an OK start to the offseason, but we get the sense another move or two could happen before the draft.

Either way, Gary has made his goal clear for 2026 -- help Dallas reclaim its NFC East dominance.
