Howell comes to the Cowboys looking to revamp his career behind Dak Prescott.

New Dallas Cowboys quarterback Sam Howell is making the rounds in the NFC East, with the former starter having played for three of the division's four teams.

Having begun his journey with the Washington Commanders in 2022, Howell became the starter in 2023 and posted a 4-13 record. That led the franchise to Jayden Daniels, and Howell was moved on.

Stops with the Minnesota Vikings, Seattle Seahawks, and the Philadelphia Eagles have seen Howell become a young journeyman at just 25 years old.

But given his age, there is plenty of room to grow, and his days as a starter are anything but over. Just ask Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold.

Sam comes to Dallas, ready to ignite his career behind Dak Prescott and under the watchful eye of second-year head coach Brian Schottenheimer.

And Howell revealed that the chance to work under Schotty was a key reason for his decision to come to Dallas.

"For my career, I'm still in a position where I think I can play a lot of good football. A lot of good football ahead of me," Howell said via ESPN. "I think the ability to be developed by [coach Brian Schottenheimer] was obviously something that was very enticing to me."

Howell will enter the quarterback room with a genuine chance at usurping Joe Milton this offseason.

We know about Milton's potential, but that has to morph into something tangible, and for Howell, he's got experience in the league (18 starts).

So, for those who think Milton will walk into the backup role in 2026, you are gravely mistaken.

"This will be my fifth year in the league, and I've had a lot of different experiences with different teams and different coaches, and I feel like I've learned a lot," Howell said.

And it will be those experiences that will hopefully serve him well this offseason as he looks to go toe-to-toe with Milton.

The decision to sign Howell is a clear sign that Dallas wants to see more from Joe and to push him to greater heights.

Time will tell if the Cowboys' vision for the quarterback room comes to life.

But one thing is for sure, Howell won't go quietly into that good night.
