The Dallas Cowboys' offseason has seen the franchise move in a vastly different way than in previous seasons.
Of course, it still leaves a lot to be desired, but there's no doubt the franchise has done things differently.
Jalen Thompson, Cobie Durant, Rashan Gary, and P.J. Locke have been the key additions for Christian Parker's defense.
That is a good quartet, but more, much more is needed.
With the Cowboys losing out on multiple linebacker options, and the need for corner and edge still critical, Dallas needs to add some more pieces.
But who?
We have seen several names mentioned, with Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Patrick Queen hearing his name often. How about Bobby Okereke or Bobby Wagner?
But there is another one, and it is rather left field.
K.D. Drummond of Cowboys Wire has proposed a move for a free agent that not many have thought about.
And that's veteran defensive end, Calais Campbell.
With Osa Odighizuwa and Solomon Thomas, the Cowboys are a little short on the defensive line. Enter Campbell.
Now, I hear you referencing Campbell's age.
But I offer you this.
Last season, at the ripe age of 39, Campbell managed 6.5 sacks, 16 quarterback hits, and nine tackles for loss.
For reference, Campbell's stats would have had him second among Cowboys in sacks and quarterback hits, and joint-second in tackles for loss last season.
So, he is still being productive at this stage of his career.
But if you liked that, you might like this even more.
When players get older, they tend to miss games for various reasons. Campbell doesn't.
In fact, he hasn't missed a game in three seasons, playing every game since 2022.
Now that's impressive.
If he were signed, he wouldn't be a starter, more of a rotational backup. Last season, it was his lowest snap count (524) since 2020 (412), which is to be expected given his age.
Campbell - a giant at 6-8 and 315 and called a "unicorn'' by Drummond - could be the type of signing that could shore up the room and give a veteran presence to it. Plus, Calais is still producing on the field. He isn't making up the numbers.
Now, I'm not sure how many would have even thought of Campbell as an option, and I sure didn't until I read K.D.'s piece.
And the more I think about it, the more I like the move.
A cheap, dependable veteran who can still get after the quarterback?
Count me in.
