The Cowboys have been proactive in free agency, and because of that, the franchise doesn't have to reach to fill a need.

Most knew that the Dallas Cowboys' main area of concern entering the offseason would be overhauling the defense for new coordinator Christian Parker.

And you can make the case that with a handful of impactful signings, with each one made with a specific idea in mind of how they will be used, Dallas has done that.

Of course, the franchise isn't done adding players.

Linebacker is still a huge need, so too is adding another pass rusher, but the Cowboys have time before the draft to address those needs.

And if they don't?

Well, the Cowboys have two first-round picks to help bring this thing home. So, at the time of writing, there isn't a need to reach to fill a need.

Dallas added to the secondary with Jalen Thompson, Cobie Durant, and PJ Locke, and traded for Rashan Gary for some more pass rush juice.

So it is no wonder that head coach Brian Schottenheimer is pleased with where his team sits in the build-up to the draft.

“I'm excited about what we did in free agency," Schottenheimer said on the Up & Adams Show. "We filled a lot of holes. We got Rashan Gary in a trade. We really wanted to secure the secondary, so we got some really good safeties, some really good corners.

"We want to go into the draft with the two first-round picks, drafting pure, and I think we're going to be able to do that."

We have seen the trouble Dallas has gotten itself into over the past few years when they have drafted for need.

Two players immediately spring to mind: Mazi Smith and Luke Schoonmaker.

Mazi is no longer on the roster (New York Jets), and Schoonmaker is fighting for his life to be part of Schottenheimer's offense in Year 4.

That's what "drafting pure'' does not look like.

So the Cowboys have positioned themselves well to go BPA (best player available) or, as Schottenheimer stated, "draft pure." And that is what all teams strive to do in free agency.

The defensive overhaul has gotten off to a good start, but with a couple of weeks to go before the draft, the Cowboys can still fill roster holes.  Then, with those draft selections, fill out the rest of the roster.

That was the plan coming into the offseason, and it appears Dallas has executed it to perfection.
