The Cowboys have a mini-bye after playing on Thursday night, and it has allowed the staff to go through everything with a fine-tooth comb.

The Dallas Cowboys entered their mini-bye after a horrific loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and fans wanted answers.

With Christian Parker's defense getting curb-stomped by a rookie quarterback, and Brian Schottenheimer's offense having an off day, it was ugly all around.

In fact, the 24-16 scoreline flattered Dallas.

So, the mini-bye was the perfect chance for the Cowboys to take a deep look at everything that went wrong and devise a plan to improve.

Part of that was hiring former defensive coordinator Mike Pettine, who has worked with both Schottenheimer and Parker at several stops.

So that is one move.

The other was Schotty, saying there will be some changes, some noticeable, others less so, but overall, the bye week came at the right time for this ailing Dallas team.

"It was a very, very beneficial weekend, I will say," Schottenheimer said. "A lot of long hours spent, a lot of long conversations, a lot of deep dives where we're looking at everything from all three units. Came away with a lot of what we would say really good solutions and ideas that now it's about implementing, and that began today."

So now we eagerly await seeing what sort of changes will happen ahead of the visit to Lambeau Field and the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night.

Plus, what sort of changes will there be personnel-wise?

Will we see alterations involving DaRon Bland and Jake Ferguson, two stars who are highly paid but have started the season poorly with costly mistakes? Fans sure hope so.

Either way, the Cowboys should be praised for getting Parker the "sounding board'' needed, and by all accounts, they tried to get Pettine in the building this offseason, but he opted to retire.

Now he's back in football, looking to help his former student navigate his first year as an NFL coordinator. Schottenheimer says it was a beneficial weekend for the team, and in truth, it needed to be.

There were so many questions aimed at the feet of Schottenheimer and Parker after the Buccaneers' loss, and now the franchise has been proactive.

Time will tell if it works, but either way, Dallas didn't sit on its hands and hope the problem fixed itself.
