The Miami Dolphins go winless against the Cincinnati Bengals, but the offense set a career high in points.
The Miami Dolphins continue to show that this roster and team are far from being able to compete.
The defense continues to let the middle of the field be their Achilles heel, while the offensive chemistry always comes far too late. Despite a fourth-quarter surge, Miami dropped the game 31-24.
Here are the instant takeaways from the Dolphins Week 5 loss.
Malik Willis Continues to Struggle
Despite some fourth-quarter magic when quarterback Malik Willis threw a touchdown on the run to rookie wide receiver Kevin Coleman Jr., Willis struggled through the entire day.
Willis was held to under 100 passing yards through nearly four quarters of action, and he threw two costly interceptions that led to Bengals points. A final fumble also led to the end of the game.
The biggest issue the young passer has is his want to throw something significant.
The major difference between a seasoned pro like Joe Burrow and Willis is knowing when to take the checkdown. Burrow diced the Dolphins' offense up over the middle and finally got Ja'Marr Chase on a crazy touchdown in the third quarter.
Ollie Gordon II Needs the Ball
The expectation when running back De'Von Achane went down was that Jaylen Wright would be the lead back, but Ollie Gordon II continues to show how explosive he can be.
Gordon ended the day with 73 yards and one touchdown on 17 carries for a 4.3 yards-per-carry average. Wright secured 11 yards on six carries.
When Gordon was cooking, the Dolphins decided to put Wright in, which did not help the run game at all. Offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik needs to give Gordon the ball whenever possible.
Injuries Pile Up
Nothing can stall progress like injuries, and the Dolphins day was full of them.
Linebacker Jordyn Brooks went down and was questionable with a foot injury. He would eventually return in the third quarter, but he was out for quite a bit of time.
Right guard Jonah Savaiinaea was also taken out of the game due to an ankle injury, and he would not return.
Rookie safety Michael Taaffe was taken out due to a chest injury, but he would also return.
Cornerback JuJu Brents initially suffered what was believed to be a concussion, but he was evaluated and cleared. He was then hit with a stinger and was taken out of the game in the fourth quarter.
Gordon was also out for a brief period in the fourth, but also returned.
Dolphins Set Season-High Points
The Dolphins are 0-5 this season, but the team secured a season-high 24 points. While that was nowhere near enough to catch the Bengals, there were some positives.
Once Willis shook off his struggles, he was accurate and threw the dart touchdown to Coleman while on the run. It showed the accuracy that he possesses when not under duress.
If the offense can find a way to mitigate some crucial mistakes, they could continue to show some promise as the weeks go on.
