Miami Dolphins assistant general manager Kyle Smith has officially been interviewed for the vacant general manager position for the Minnesota Vikings.

The Miami Dolphins have been very busy this offseason, not only bringing in a brand-new coaching staff under Jeff Hafley, but also reworking the front office under general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan.

One of Sullivan's biggest hires was former Atlanta Falcons assistant general manager Kyle Smith, who joined the Dolphins in the same role. Now, Smith is up for a promotion of his own, as he is one of the candidates for the vacant general manager position for the Minnesota Vikings.

Per NFL insider Tom Pelissero, Smith is among the candidates that has been requested to be interviewed for the Vikings general manager position.

Smith just recently wrapped up his first draft with the Dolphins after being hired by Sullivan back in January. Despite Sullivan likely wanting the assistant general manager to stick around, he could find his way to leading the front office for the Vikings.

Smith started his foray into the NFL as a player, initially signing with the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent in 2006. He would bounce around from several practice squads, eventually ending his playing career in 2009.

Smith would then move into operations with the then-Washington Redksins in 2010, initially beginning as a scouting intern. After working his way up with the organization to vice president of player personnel in 2020, he would take the same position with the Falcons in 2021.

In 2023, Smith was promoted to assistant general manager, where he remained through 2025, until he was brought to the Dolphins to serve in the same role.

Now, Smith has the chance to become a first-time general manager, assuming the Vikings offer him the job. His trajectory is similar to Sullivan, who also worked his way up in the Green Bay Packers organization before landing the general manager position with Miami in 2026.

Smith might also be viewed as a strong candidate, as he had a hand in the 2026 NFL Draft for the Dolphins, which has been overtly viewed as very positive. After taking 13 players in the draft, which is the second-highest in organization history, the team hit on some very good players.

Granted, those players may not be seen as a success for another season or two, but the overall consensus is that the Dolphins addressed their rebuild and torn-down roster in a major way. With Smith being the assitant to Sullivan, he could be viewed as a leading candidate for the Vikings job.
