The Miami Dolphins have traded Quinn Ewers to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
UPDATE:
The Miami Dolphins will receive a 2028 sixth round pick for Quinn Ewers.
The Miami Dolphins have some work to do at their backup quarterback position, and it appears they are prepared to do just that. In a surprise move, the team is trading second-year passer Quinn Ewers to the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Per multiple reports, the Dolphins are sending Ewers to the Jaguars in exchange for swapping Day 3 pick in the 2028 NFL Draft.
Ewers was drafted in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft and had been thrust into action late in the season when the Dolphins chose to bench Tua Tagovailoa.
Ewers ended his 2025 campaign with 622 passing yards, three touchdowns, three interceptions, and a 66.3 completion percentage.
Fast-forwarding to the 2026 season, the idea was that Ewers would settle into the backup position behind Malik Willis, and it appeared to be the case through OTAs and minicamp. However, the second-year passer began to regress and eventually suffered a groin injury that knocked him out of preseason action.
With Cam Miller and Mark Gronowski taking over, it appears that Miami is choosing instead to move Ewers instead of wait for him to return healthy.
Miller and Gronowski also had limited success, and it would be believed that the Dolphins may be seeking to bring in more quarterback depth once teams began to cut down their own rosters.
There are also some veteran options that may be explored, but there certainly is something that needs to be done.
Granted, the Dolphins are banking on Willis being fully healthy and commanding the offense through all 17 games of the regular season, but anything can happen. Should Willis be injured or not be able to take the field, the team will need to have a strong insurance option behind him.
It will not be the least bit shocking if another quarterback or two are brought in following teams cutting down their rosters. Considering the move to trade Ewers, it would also not be the least bit shocking if the Dolphins already have someone in mind.
The cutdown day for all 32 teams is on August 30 at 6 pm EST, meaning the Dolphins will need to have their quarterback room set by then. There could be some options brought onto the practice squad who are then elevated, but more work needs to be done to bolster the options behind Willis.
For Ewers, he now joins a Jaguars team after spending one year in South Floriday playing behind Tua Tagovailoa.
