Miami Dolphins head coach Jeff Hafley revealed that linebacker Trey Moore is set to undergo surgery, and he offered more updates on key players.
Miami Dolphins rookie linebacker Trey Moore will be out for some time, as head coach Jeff Hafley stated that he will undergo surgery.
Moore suffered an apparent leg injury when he was attempting to tackle quarterback Jameis Winston during the Dolphins' second preseason game against the New York Giants on Saturday.
The result of the hit led to Moore being on the ground for several minutes. He had to be assisted up and onto a cart, which pointed to the rookie having suffered something rather significant.
Initially, Hafley did not have much information and did not want to share much, instead waiting for the test results to come back. Those results have happened, and Moore will be out for quite some time.
The good news is Hafley also indicated that it may not be season-ending.
"Trey will have surgery, and I would be hopeful that he'll be back at some point this season, but it'll be a while," Hafley said ahead of practice on Tuesday.
The rookie linebacker had been a standout since OTAs and was expected to take on a starting role. Now, he will be out for a large portion of the season.
Additional Dolphins Injury Updates
Hafley also broke down injuries to many other starters ahead of the team's final preseason game.
Defensive tackle Kenneth Grant has been dealing with an undisclosed injury throughout training camp, and Hafley indicated that he will not be playing this week, or the following week.
"Kenneth will not be around this week," Hafley said. "I would say doubtful for the following week. I would say he’s week to week."
Fellow defensive tackle Zach Sieler is also dealing with a lingering training camp injury, but the Dolphins head coach stated Sieler is "real close" to returning.
Zeek Biggers also got "banged up" during the Washington Commanders' joint practice, but is also set to return very soon.
Linebacker Jordyn Brooks is also dealing with an injury that has kept him out of practice for the past two weeks. He will also not participate this week, but is expected to be back next week.
"I like where Jordyn’s at right now," Hafley said. "Do I think he’ll be back this week? No. Do I think he’ll be back next week? Yeah. I think he’s getting closer."
In terms of where rookie wide receiver Chris Bell stands, following his return to team drills, Hafley also indicated there could be a chance that Bell may play in the final preseason game, though that truly depends on how he progresses during practice this week.
Adding Bell would be huge for the offense, especially if he can establish quick chemistry with quarterback Malik Willis.
Oddly enough, the Dolphins head coach also commented on the backup quarterback position, stating that he still views it as a competition between Cam Miller and Quinn Ewers.
With a final week left of preseason action, one or the other will need to show they can lead this offense in a significant way. Otherwise, the team will need to find a veteran option once players are cut.
