A look at the keys for the Miami Dolphins to notch their first win of the 2026 season against the New York Jets.

The Miami Dolphins are coming off a Week 6 bye, and the usual case for a week of rest can lead to some better results. The issue is that the team is still 0-5 and has had plenty of struggles thus far this season.

Miami is also facing a divisional rival in the New York Jets, which have been highly competitive. Divisional matchups are always tough, but even more so when you are a winless team.

Here are the keys for the Dolphins to notch their first win.

3. Establish the Run Game

The Dolphins may have lost De'Von Achane for the season, but Ollie Gordon II has emerged as a strong back since he took over. Despite head coach Jeff Hafley not indicating that Gordon is the outright lead back over Jaylen Wright, Gordon's production on the field proves he should be.

Gordon has a tough-running style that he utilizes with his big frame to punch the pocket and move the chains.

Establishing the run game early and sticking to it can help the Dolphins control the field. Gordon needs to be the lead back, and he should get the ball as much as possible to wear down the Jets' defense.

2. Limit Penalties

Nothing can stall drives more than pre- and post-snap penalties, and the Dolphins have committed plenty.

Making sure the offense can sustain drives and the defense can make stops without getting in their own way is paramount. Hafley has harped on process and fundamentals, and now is the time for the Dolphins to have cleaned that up.

After a week of rest and the chance to dial in the finer aspects of the game plan, Miami needs to put their discipline into practice.

1. Malik Willis Needs to Take the Easy Pass

Dolphins quarterback Malik Willis has had trouble getting into a full rhythm with the offense, and that may be due to the offensive game plan, receiver chemistry, and more.

Willis has the kind of arm that he can deliver deep ball shots, but he also does not need to force shots like that, which turn into costly turnovers. Finding a happy medium needs to happen.

Willis needs to take the checkdown and easy passes when they are there. Getting yards and sustaining drives is far more important than trying to get the ball downfield for 50+ yards.

Those shots may come at times, but getting the team in scoring position by sustaining drives is what will lead to success.
