The Miami Dolphins signed wide receiver Jalen Tolbert, and he could be a sneaky good signing for the team.

The Miami Dolphins stayed very busy through the first week of free agency, as general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan brought in a multitude of low-cost options that could make waves in 2026. One such player is wide receiver Jalen Tolbert, who comes over from the Dallas Cowboys.

Tolbert was drafted by the Cowboys in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft out of South Alabama, and he has spent his entire career in Dallas.

Tolbert is still young in his career, having appeared in 55 games with 33 starts in four seasons. He has totaled 1,093 yards and 10 touchdowns in that time, with 91 receptions and a 12-yard per catch average.

While Tolbert's production has dipped since his 49 catches and 610 yards performance in 2024, he has proven to be a red zone target, also hauling in a career-high seven touchdowns in 2024.

What makes this signing far more intriguing is the size of Tolbert. Most of the receivers the Dolphins have had on the team in recent years have been shorter in height and provide more in the speed category.

That is not the case for Tolbert, who comes in at 6-foot-1 and is 195 pounds. He has a larger frame for a receiver and could be a key element when it comes to balls that are deemed contested.

Tolbert can be prioritized in the contested ball area, which is not something that Miami has had in recent years. Having a receiver that can potentially be a weapon for the deeper throws.

Another aspect of Tolbert's resume is that he linked up with quarterback Malik Willis at the 2022 Reese's Senior Bowl. Neither has played together at the NFL level, but there is familiarity with the pair from that game.

Tolbert's 2024 season was the best of his career, but the addition of George Pickens saw him fall down the depth chart. He also had an issue with drops, as he accumulated four that season.

Despite the drops and a 2025 season that saw him only haul in 203 yards and one touchdown, his skill set will be valuable to this rebuilt offense.

Tolbert does not have a history of being the best route runner, but he could provide the size that the wide receiver room has desperately been lacking.

With Jaylen Waddle, Tutu Atwell, Malik Washington, Tahj Washington, and Theo Wease Jr. rounding out the receiving room thus far, Tolbert has a strong chance to be the WR2 lining up alongside Waddle.

Tolbert might also be a slot that can be used in over-the-middle mismatch types of plays, where he can be used in his contested catch strength to offer another layer for this Dolphins offense.

The production on paper is not necessarily screaming superstar receiver, but Tolbert has also not been given a true chance to emerge. He may find that his abilities in Bobby Slowik's offense can make him take that next step.

At a simple one-year deal, the Dolphins may have found one of the steals of free agency.
